One person went through all of someone's old threads and bumped them all. Practically anyone can do that to anyone here.
Perhaps. But as I was trying to point out with a bit of humor, you can’t really claim they were nercoed or even that that the theads are ‘old’.
At most you can say well someone went through and bumped my threads that had already fallen off the front page to make it look worst then it is. And I don’t really think there is a rule against bumping post that fell off the front page. So unless they are also doing something else, I’m not sure how they would burn themselves.
Although it is an ESO forum and they can pretty much make up the rules as they go. So who knows.
Bumping is against the rules. Mods get to decide what is bumping, and what is not.
"2.7 You may not disrupt the flow of chat in chat rooms, message forums or games with vulgar language, abusive behavior, multiple key returns or posting large images in an attempt to disturb other users. Spamming, flooding [posting repetitive text], bumping and any other disruptive behavior will not be tolerated."
Ah. I had not looked at the actual thread. I just assumed the person was smart enough to reply to the threads like they were actually engaging in the conversation. Not just BUMP!

Oh I have no issues with threads that are "more chill" or are rants or praises or anything that is related to the game to be in the General Discussion forum. Just not when half of them are from the same person. Again, the issue isn't about the General Discussion forums being filled with unimportant threads by the community in general. It's about one person
As I stated earlier (that you conveniently cut out while cherry picking with your quote), I'm actually very neutral on the subject. It's interesting to see what arguments people come up with for or against. I myself haven't even voted on the poll because I'm genuinely curious as to what people think.
There is a difference between a new player creating a thread about something that they genuinely didn't know had been discussed before and someone who thrives on selecting subjects that are largely controversial (that has active discussions virtually on a weekly basis) and that he knows will create more endless back and forth.
So censorship is not necessarily a bad thing, and it is strange to hear an ex "mod" imply that censorship is automatically an evil.
There are already very stringent rules and "censorship" on this, or any average gaming forum. These censorship rules are for the betterment of the community, protecting its members from being named and shamed, being insulted, etc. Spam rules are commonplace in many forums and platforms, so this is not a case of precedence. Precedence has already been set. You can't even spam messages in-game. If you send too many messages within a certain time frame, you have to wait a short time before you are able to send more. Does this make life horrible for the average player? No, quite the contrary actually. This is the same concept.
I now wonder if you even read the OP. I had 2 sentences, one of which was a single word. I stated that I was curious how the community felt about people who created an (in my opinion) excessive amount of threads.
So you haven't been on any forums for the past 11 years and still have the gall to proclaim to be a forum mod, implying that you have more experience than the average forum goer?
I fed a lion once 11 years ago at the zoo. That doesn't entitle me to go around proclaiming myself as a lion tamer.

One person?
So your problem is that one person posts too often? Seriously?
You do realise how ridiculous it sounds? You wouldn't have that problem if the person in question kept posting, by your standards, super awesome and insightful posts?

You do realise we're talking about one person in particular that apparently gets on your nerves..and because of that you'd love a thread cap?
duendology wrote: »So censorship is not necessarily a bad thing, and it is strange to hear an ex "mod" imply that censorship is automatically an evil.
Censorship and rules of conduct, so to speak, are two different things. Hopefully, you see the difference.
Censorship is bad. Period.

But it's not "censorship". It's called rules of conduct. You, on the other hand, seem to sprout your philosophies because one person gets on your nerves. If feels like it. It really does. Fortunately, it's up to he mods to decide what posts stay and what get locked.

I have.. but I tend to "think ahead", if that makes sense.
Personally, I don't mind excessive amount of threads posted by a single person. One needs to be a really frustrated human being if something that trivial such forum posts triggers that much attention . YOU do have a choice though... don't click on it. It clutter the forums for you. Ouch!? Do some scrolling? Or is it too exhausting?
OR set up your own forum. This is a public place.
duendology wrote: »So you haven't been on any forums for the past 11 years and still have the gall to proclaim to be a forum mod, implying that you have more experience than the average forum goer?
I do.

The difference between us is that I fed that "lion" for 8 years.. you did it once..
Seriously? And what kind of lethal danger this precedence may cause in future? I think all this argument is much ado about nothing. And may suggest that, maybe...just maybe, people spend too much time on the forums (in general).
One person posting too often and left unmoderated is an important precedence for the potential future. If you're as "forward thinking" as you claim to be, you'd see that.
As aforementioned, I'm neutral on the matter, no matter how hard you try to push me into any one side. And also as aforementioned, it just takes 1 person to set a dangerous precedence.
Censorship is born out of rules of conduct. You can't type a swear word into a post (it gets censored) because of the rules of conduct. That's not a bad thing, in my opinion.
My philosophies? What philosophies pray tell do you speak of? I'd also like to address the fact that you're evading the main point of my post. Spam rules have been commonplace in any forum, and is even implemented in-game.
Ah, so your point is "yes it might clutter the forums, but you're the problem for not scrolling more"? That's adorable. Clutter is clutter, and has no place on forums of any kind.

Regardless, to be out of touch for 11 years only to return and to assume that nothing's changed and to assume some sort of authority is really quite entitled of you. It's quite amusing to witness.

This is my entire reason against a up/down vote system.LiquidPony wrote: »The problem I have with the ESO forums is the same problem I've had with every other forum for the past 5 years or so: they just suck compared to Reddit.

Mh, while I like reddit for some topics I can't say I'm in favour of this sentiment in regards to online games. Too many agendas and potential for fighting, be it the competitive side (edit: PvP or PvE world firsts) or even just from an economical (trading) aspect. Downvoting just because someone is from the other faction, or a competing trading guild etc. He who organizes the most people online during popular times wins?

Seriously? A lethal threat because ONE person has been hyperactive on the forums so we'll face a forumgeddon? Hurry up, ZOS, create a daily thread cap!
Am I the only one who thinks it's ridiculous?
duendology wrote: »Censorship is born out of rules of conduct. You can't type a swear word into a post (it gets censored) because of the rules of conduct. That's not a bad thing, in my opinion.
Your understanding of censorship is rather.. narrow. No, not swearing every second word..keeps things civil. Not throwing a verbal meat at each other (name calling, shaming concrete forum members) also helps to keep things civil. You know, being polite and not behaving like an a**hole...
Censorship is when you don't - or can't - speak freely because an expressed opinion - or truth - is inconvenient or uncomfortable to someone else or some group of people. Either you're prohibited by a political system (all forms of political regimes) and you can face serious repercussions if you do. Or you're censored by the public opinion to express yourself freely OR/AND you auto-censor yourself in order to abaide - the already abused and grotesque, yet needed - political correctness for the sake of comfort zones, conformity, and all that s**t...
It wouldn't have been an issue of they were posted by different people, no. Which is exactly the point. Everyone is due to make a pointless thread or thoughtless comment every now and then. Some might argue that this thread in itself is pointless. It's when a single person constantly makes pointless posts and even seems to feed off of people asking them to stop that it becomes an issue.duendology wrote: »My philosophies? I am not. Maybe because you and I have a different understanding of spam. And this one poster in question..as much as the posts by this person seem rather pretentious and ridiculous, they're not spam. YET. Would it even have been an issue if all those threads had been posted by different people?
Another thing we can agree on, huzzah.duendology wrote: »Ah, so your point is "yes it might clutter the forums, but you're the problem for not scrolling more"? That's adorable. Clutter is clutter, and has no place on forums of any kind.
Puppies are adorable.
duendology wrote: »Umm, no. My point is that if I post 10 threads within 30 minutes, each on a different topic.. that does not really constitute spam, does it? Also, again, my point is that limiting the poster's number of daily posts/replies, they way you described it, is nothing more but "make this person post less because s/he gets on my nerves". And again. all this fuss because one poster.
WOW!
What do they call it? First World Problems?

To which I'll quote myself from my previous reply...."And you misunderstood. Just because I was not producing myself verbally ON forums it does not mean I haven't read any OR engaged in discussions via other platforms. Moderating academic discussion panels in real life included."
So, it's not like I got "offline" for 11 years. o_0

being honest about it, my initial reaction was that it seemed a little like online bullying to try to restrict someone from making "too" many threads...
plus, a good bit of the time those threads did have responses from other posters - someone else was in fact interested in the subject...
thinking about it now though - yeah, everyone should have a chance to have their thread sit up top for awhile - and, not have their thread get bumped by someone who's creating multiple threads on a daily basis...
I know we've had some "prolific" posters in the past...i guess there are lots of folks just looking for a little/lotattention...
still not sure which way to go on this...

No, in terms of gaming I don't agree with the sentiment of downvoting - and the ignore feature works pretty good overall here in my opinion.
If the forums are really toxic - and the game providing company tolerates that ... well it comes down to if I like the game enough to keep playing and if the people in-game are as toxic - bottom line is my gaming experience enjoyable. If not I move on. I'm not going to judge these communities, they just have other values than I do.
