Can't repair walls and gates

Hi there,
stopped playing 3 years ago and now just started one month ago again. Just started some PvP again.
I still have many repair materials left in my bag, but after a siege I just can't use it with "Q". Why?
I keep on getting the "Item not ready" message.
My first thought was it is still the same problem I had 3 years ago when many people try to repair something, but even alone I'm not able to repair anything. I'm I doing something wrong?

✭✭✭✭✭You need to line it up right. Doors especially are a little tricky. To start I face the open broken door, then move to the middle and face outwards.
