Why are there only three colors for quest markers?

Here's the number of different types of quests in the (base)game:

Main quest
Zone story quest
Fighter's Guild quest
Mage's Guild quest
Daily quest
Misc quest

Of all these, the only type that gets a different color are the daily quests, and all quests turn white when you have that quest selected, for 3 total colors.

I'm guessing PC (as usual) has an addon to remedy this, but why was it designed this way in the first place? Why aren't zone story quests given a color, like green, so people don't have to guess which quests they need to do to finish a zone's story? It's not like this would take Zenimax much time at all to add, so what gives?

Not strictly opposed to the idea but it seems like that could get confusing for new players. On PC we have addons that help us distinguish between quest types.
    Leylith - MagSorc | Leyloth - StamPlar | Leynerd - MagPlar | Leylit - StamBlade | Ley Eviticus - StamDK | Leydor - MagDen | Leylum - StamSorc | Leylux - MagBlade

When the game launched we didn't even have repeatable quests coloured differently.

My guess is ZOS doesn't want ESO to look all colourful as the main UI has a standard colouring which isn't intrusive. If players want to just finish a specific set of quests and ignore the side quests then normally they can follow the path or use the journal entries to see where to go, failing that UESP and other guide sites are just a smart phone search away.

How would it be confusing for new players? Anyone with even the slightest intelligence would figure out rather quickly that "green means quest is more significant/awards skill point".

I would definitely like a different color for the zone main quests. I remember back when I first started after figuring out that it's possible to do the zone main quests out of order (and thus lead to confusing plots in quests) that any time I went into a new zone I would avoid exploring in random directions until I completed that zones main quest line, out of fear of accidentally doing a quest that I thought was a side quest, that turned out to be a later part of the main zone line.

Tons don't care about that I'm sure and just want the skill points, but for players interested in the story and like exploring, that would be a very helpful thing.

I would like different shapes. Maybe circles for notices (crafting, housing) and squares for daily quests.

would be nice if quests granting skill points would be colored differently from normal zone quests, yes
max level: mDK, stamBlade, stamSorc, magPlar, mDen, stamDen, magBlade, stamCro
    ESO+
    # of mules: 4 (FULL)
    maxed bank: FULL -_-
Stop the grind! Get rid of stupid events and daily-quest gallore. Get rid of "have a chance of 1 in a million to get a piece of 1 in 30 to get a stupid motif or pet... wtf..."
And at this point just remove all classes and have everyone choose their set of skills. then balance accordingly to skills always used vs. skills never used.

Good lord I hope not. Real gamers have a two or three monitor setups. Can't imagine looking stuff up on my phone.

@omegatay_ESO I made note of phone as it's something generally everyone has and the OP appears to be a console player.

Although I do agree with you, I couldn't ever go back to less than two monitors.

If you want more, and to be able to customize them, you can use AdvancedUI, if you can do addons.

I'm not against it, but it seems unnecessary. The quests aren't that difficult to track. If you are aiming for something specific, take two seconds and go into your quest menu. I have never been confused by what quest I'm doing.

Personally, I don't want several different color icons on my UI. I like the way they've implemented it to not be intrusive and cartoon-y. The main story lines for each zone pretty much guide you where you need to be and if not, (as stated above) you can always use UESP for more info.

I prefer simplicity rather than colours everywhere. ESO's interface is increasingly becoming a bit more and more cluttered. Let's try to keep that to a minimum

Addons shouldn't be required for something this simple. Also, console.
