Online MMO's don't work. If you don't play the game you have no clue about the lore.

Jackson managed to make LOTR work without needing to read the books.
There really is no reason why a fantasy game series cannot be made into a self-contained movie.

LOTR was based on The Hobbit though. It was a sequel released in 1968. That's a lot of time for people of several generations to read.

I never read a LotR book yet I got engrossed into the films. It all depends on how the world is introduced in the film.

The elder scrolls was an rpg long bbefore an mmo. TES series befor TESO was super popular. Warcraft before WoW was popular, but not nearly as popular as skyrim, oblivion or morrowind. It is TOTALLY doable.
Oblivion into a movie would be legendary. Then again, so would skyrim.

just do better than the Hobbit

RPG or MMO...it's still a game. Games made into movies haven't been very successful in the past.
