The Wooden Mask

Back in Skyrim we ran across a wooden Dragonpriest mask that transports you through time. What was the original intended purpose of this mask? Were the Dragon Priests planning to grab reinforcements from the past once Alduin returned? Was it supposed to be some priest's last-ditch escape route? Or is it just what it appears - an overly-fancy vault key and nothing more? (I freely admit to being disappointed that there was no quest after gathering all the masks.) Is it likely to make an appearance in the upcoming DLC?

There's nothing solid to say the wooden mask transports you through time. Frankly, no one but Bethesda knows what the intentions for this items was or is in the future.

Transporting through time seems a matter of (magical) narration and memories, to me.

Remember some occurences of "visiting the past" during quests in ESO, like that orc warchief story in Betnikh or the Alessian war in Glenumbra moors.
Also, a spinner is able to tell the story from an item, about its former owner (in Reaper s March iirc).

I think this mask indeed could act like a memory stone of some sort, for this purpose

my impression was that the wooden mask would take you somewhere else, not sometime, with it porting the user into some pocket realm where the shrine had been preserved.
