New item set...

As per the Patch Notes for the coming update, we are being treated to this apparently phenomenal gear set (for those of us that love our high Spell Crits of course):

•Caluurion’s Legacy (Light)

•(2) Spell Critical
•(3) Spell Power
•(4) Spell Critical
•(5) When you deal Critical Damage with a single target Magicka ability, you launch a Fire, Ice, Shock, or Disease ball at your target that deals 12,900 damage and applies a status effect. This effect can occur once every 10 seconds.

Anyone else pumped for this set?

I can already envision this combined with Mothers Sorrow and Slimeclaw; with the goal of attaining 80+% Spell Crit (combined with Soul Assault and those great single target Templar abilities)...

What are you guys take on this set?

Like a lower proc, non-aoe, possibly elemental Velidreth for magicka players.

With the potential burst, it'll be used more in PVP. Its usefulness will depend on the way the projectile hits (or doesn't hit) players. If its too good of a proc set, I expect it to be all the range for a month and then get the same nerf that Viper did.

    Not a lot nowadays...

Do you think this items proc will be similar to Red Mountains?

You know, even if it is, Soul Assault will snare its target, so you may still be able to lay waste to your victim when this sets proc is combined with the above ability...

Although I imagine the killing burst would go something like: Purifying Light, Toppling Charge, followed by SA (which would be followed by Radiant Destruction in the event that your target is still alive after SA); with a high Spell Crit, this set will proc on atleast one of those attacks on average, so the burst can be strong...

What I mean is, why would you run this over Skoria?

    Yeah...

How it hits will be critical as to how well this set performs...

Hopefully it'll be hard to evade at close range though...

Well, you don't need to combine it with SA to kill, but it would make your kills more certain... ;)

Also, this set wouldn't interfere with Skoria at all as Skoria is a Monster Set and this is not; running this and Skoria would work perfectly fine, but I'd choose Slimeclaw instead as it would increase the rate at which this set would proc (and it would increase the damage of all of your dps abilities)...

You misunderstand how this set works.

It has a 10s cooldown, what your crit chance is doesn't really matter - what matters is when the proc occurs and what it's combo'd with.

I don't misunderstand anything; the set procs on a single target Magicka ability critical attack...

So, if you want it to consistently crit on cooldown, you want to have a high spell crit...

Yes, it procs on a crit - but all you need is that one of your hits crits - high crit chance isn't necessary for this.

Also, as a burst oriented set you definitely don't want it to consistently proc on cooldown - you want it to proc when you need it to proc (i.e. during combo).

Let's say your combo consists of 3 different single target attacks & 2 single target DoT ticks happen during the period. In this scenario your crit chance is a measly 30%.

    0,7*0,7*0,7*0,7*0,7

Congratulations, you have a 83,2% chance of proccing the set.

...and if you're a magblade, you can actually 100% guarantee it procs with Shadowy Disguise.

This set will be much, much more effective when you build upon capitalizing the extra burst it gives (proc deals more dmg than most single target abilities). This means spell dmg/penetration, other procs etc.

Yes, with this set magblades will be the strongest gankers out there (this should far surpass the overloads & snipes), and with concealed, cloak & shadow image they can actually survive after ganking people.

Going to test this next patch, but most likely the set will be nerfed before then (at melee range it hits pretty much instantly, as you can see from the timestamps on that screenshot I posted).

Ah, but I ideally want my Alpha Attack to Crit (which is almost always Purifying Light when I am going for my killing combo)...

So I ideally want Purifying Light to crit every single time its cast as a result; this is best accomplished with my Spell Crit being as high as I can possibly get it...

Making it highly likely that Purifying Light crits also has the advantage of making Purifyings burst hit as hard as it possibly can...

I envision senario's were the following will occur (and ideally as a gankplar as the build will be too squishy to fight openly):

    1) Purifying Light at close range from stealth (at a 80% crit chance, the odds are it will crit here)...
    2) Toppling Charge (if the new set doesn't crit on Purifying Light, then the odds become very heavy that it'll proc here at point blank range which will make it very hard to evade; especially if it CC's my victim)...
    3) Soul Assault (in the very unlikely event that it doesn't proc on the 1st two abilities then its almost a certainty that it'll proc here...
    4) Radiant Destruction if needed (which can potentially make the set proc in the event that it doesn't proc the 1st 3 times, but this should be very rare)......

Edit: with my idea, I would nearly equal your chance of procing the set on my 1st attack where as it takes you 5 attacks to get beyond 80% crit chance...

How it can be used is gonna massively depend on its travel time.

Looks like it'll be really effective for melee. My melee magblade is looking at this along with the miats nerf.... Magsorc though? All depends on travel time and therefore likelihood to hit at range.

I honestly think I'm not really looking forward to a return to a proc/gank meta.

The set isn´t that good on magsorc - both magica proccsets are much better suited for mDK and magblade.

20k on a target dummy with zero travel time. That is potentially 10k in pvp, as long as you can get enough penetration.

Yes, even with the charge-nerf, this on a magblade with lotus + incapacitate, means instant death for everyone running less than 25k health.

    *** brilliant design, dear devs.

Well, 21,7k to be exact because it puts the status effect in play as well (before the proc even), so that Burning tick boosts it a little.

You can also high roll the lightning projectile & hit even harder, since it puts Minor Vulnerability on target before the actual damaging part of the proc.

...or you can low roll & get Disease proc, which deals a bit less dmg.

Yeah they are dropping the ball on this, more unique sets with specialty buffs would be amazing, not just some lame dps proc. Something similar to the unique weapon drops would be what i'm thinking.

If they're good sets, everyone in that class will wear it - something ZOS hates to see and responds to with nerfs.
If they aren't good, no one will wear them over the more general sets.

You see this happen with new and old sets all the time. For example, it was well-nigh mandatory for MagDKs to wear Burning Spellweave for a while, so ZOS nerfed it. Flameblossom ought to be a good set for MagDKs, but is lackluster in comparison to more generalized sets, so practically no one wears it.

That's only one example, but there's many more. ZOS doesn't like BIS sets to stay BIS for long (mostly so they can keep players grinding for the new BIS gear.)

There is a travel time, a very long travel time (I'll try to get a video of this, stay tuned).

The thing is that in melee range this travel time doesn't really exist - not that it'd even matter for magblade builds because you first proc it with Lotus Fan & then Concealed Weapon for a stun & it'd just hit people while they're stunned.

The bright side? Melee magblade (a non-meta rarity...) is looking really enticing at the moment.
