Well not bad for the player but the poor horse dying a horrible death over and over which is why you shouldn't name your horse because it died long ago

Yes, horses can swim, but not in my experience with someone riding on their back. If a horse is ridden into deep water, and loses its footing then one way or another the rider is coming off. The rider gets dismounted, just like happens in the game. Once the rider emerges from the water they can mount up again - provided they have still got a hold of their horse.
