Hi all. Literally just dipped my toes in the online gaming world last week! Started on eso as a dark elf dragonknight. Going off the information given about character and class, im pumping stamina and magicka with a slight lean towards stamina because my twin blade flurry attack (cant remember the actual name off the top of my head) deals DoT and heals me in the process for a % which i like as a skill. Im pumping magicka too purely because the dark elf has high fire power (pun intended) so im building up the ardent flame skills for this purpose. Just wanted to know if this is a good approach or if im better changing my path now whilst at a reletively low level (level20)
Thanks in advance

Play whatever you want till you get to CP 160.

So is it pretty pointless being strategic about it until then or is it good to have a base foundation like im trying to do?

    Welcome to ESO!

You can reset all your skills and attributes whenever you want at a shrine in your alliances capital, which in your case is probably Mournhold. That will cost some gold though. So dont worry about choices too much now, just get familiar with the game and your class and have fun.

If you do want to know about serious character building already, its best for damage dealer characters to put enough points to health to get 17-18k health (with food) and all rest to either stamina or magicka. Since you are using dual wield, which is a stamina weapon, you could put all or most of your attribute points into stamina. But again no need to worry about it much until you get cp160 and start doing veteran dungeons and getting endgame gear.

For when i get to cp160, does my original question seem a good way to go about it or is there a better way to approach the build (sorry if this posted three times, its not showing on my end)

As my main second weapon i wanted to go more with a staff and the fire magic, again because dark elf has strong fire skills (im so the game lead me to believe lol)

In ESO, you should choose between stamina and magicka if you want to be effective. Sorry for destroing your dreams

as this being your first char, I do recommend that you look up some setups online and the rotation they use.

to get a good rotation down perfect, it is nice to train it while lvling up this first char.

though as previous answers say, it doesn´t really matter, but if you want to get it down straight when hitting toplvl, start today!

My max level dark elf DK has 58 points into stamina and 6 points into health. With that and food that gives max health and max stamina she has 17,1k health and 37,2k stamina.

Like you, she uses dual wield weapons. But bow in backbar. Dual wield, two handed axes etc and bows are all stamina weapons. How hard they hit depends of your max stamina and weapon power.

Staves are magicka weapons and they scale in damage based on your max magicka and spell power, so a character with high magicka can do lots of damage with staves.

Hybrid builds that mix stamina and magicka skills and weapons dont really work for damage dealers in this game, because if you put points in both stamina and magicka, both of them end up being quite low and then your skills hit like a wet noodle. So for max damage pick one of them and focus on that.

If you decide to focus on stamina then the dark elf fire bonus is unfortunately quite useless. Ardent flame skill line is however still good and worth leveling since you can morph some of those skills to stamina abilities that deal poison damage.

If you however decide to focus on flame damage you should then put points in magicka and none in stamina, and start using staves. Dark elf fire mages are quite good.

But again, feel free to use dual wield front bar and staff backbar while leveling, that way you get familiar with both and can then decide which one you like more and focus on that later.

Changing out which skills are morphed, where points (stam, magic, health) are allocated is quite easy, though it costs a bit of gold.

What will slow you down more is if you don't level the skill lines you really need for what ever you ultimately decide to go with. As a good rule of thumb you want to level all three class skills. Flame, Dragon, Earth. Most people try to level all armor for passives. Some are worth it even if only wearing 1 piece. Many also incorporate Fighter's, Mage's Guild, and PvP skill lines. Read up how to unlock/level these. e.g. I realized on my first character a bit late I was not leveling Fighter's Guild simply because I had not had a quick conversation with an NPC, despite killing the correct baddies.

The weapons are tougher choice here as you have stamina weapons and magic staves. Bar swapping for maximum effectiveness is key and a swapping between stamina, e.g. dual wield and stave, is tough to make great. Leveling both won't gimp you, just slow you down. But ya if you really can't decide now, maybe slowing down is fine.

dark elf dragonknights are great for setting their world on fire...

I also use dual wield and a fire stave...i don't use any of the the dual wield skills though (I do have some of the passives selected for when I want to do a little hacking and slashing)...

dragon knights have a fantastic tool kit of abilities...

not too many ranged attack abilities other than the whole stonefist move (which was definitely fun to use early on)...

the fire stave helps with ranged fighting...

until you hit around level 40 something you can definitely experiment with either stamina or magicka abilities - after that though, it would be benificial to start focusing your build a little more...

my dunmer dragonknight focuses on magicka - fire stuff in particular...he wears 5 pieces of heavy and 2 pieces of light armor...

joining the forums will definitely help you refine your characters build and playstyle - bunches of good information available :)

Just enjoy the game and ... make mistakes - it is part of the fun.

All mistakes can be fixed at the end game - everything can be changed - except your class.

But when you need a new class you just grind another alt.

    Enjoy!
