You should make alts instead of investing in 1 character, they said

Well every update and change makes me glad I built my main to do everything I ever wanted in the game. Motifs, achievements, master writs, and now transmute fully favors this approach at least from a saving gold and farming approach.

It took forever to get 360 skill points to make this happen, but as they continue to implement changes, I'm glad I did it.

Who else has 1 character they play on (I have alts for storage and crafting mat farming but I only play on my main) for most everything in the game?

Do you alt-oholics hate this design implementation or take it as the price of admission for easy role flexibility?

I play primarily on my main, leaving my alts to do crafting writs and for storage. But occasionally I'll roll one out to play with and test a theory, or when I just want to try something different. Also, I use them during dungeon events.

The only thing I dislike about it is the account-sharing of champion points and dye unlocks, I'd far rather my characters all achieved those things for themselves. Doubtless not the answer you were expecting, but some of us play multiple characters rather than "a main plus alts" and want to experience the whole game equally with them. I could never go back to playing a single character only, I find that it becomes too much like a chore if every session you log in the same character with no variety.

Only surprising thing is hearing the champion and dye unlock sharing. You might be the first person if heard say that, but you sir/ma'am get the hardcore award. I hated the vet system for that reason which was why I stuck with 1 and never change after.

None shared CP would be a pain, took me almost a year getting to cp690 playing almost every day.
Dyes would just be annoying, more so if various alts had various colors, you could bank item and dye same way crafter alt make gear.

I've stuck to my main. 99.9% of my time. I don't see myself ever creating an alt at this point. There are so many other games out there, why I would run through the same content again using different animations? That's my personal take, particularly on MMOs today.

There was a time in MMOs where a different build gave you a very different experience on a second and third run through. But not in todays MMOs.

Not intended as an insult to any developer, they are just doing what the market demands. Everyone has to be an equally special snowflake from day 1 and no one can become better at something by way of role practice, skill and strategy...You know, like what they've done with Star Wars.

I have 10 "Mains". The only Alts I have are Mules who carry my burdens.

I have two characters that tend to do most of the content, and other 8 pick and choose according to their role. But to play this game on one class/character is just not good. Balance changes have had me park a class for months at a time. Having at least one character in each class allows me to play the class that is the lest impacted by the attempts to balance PvP.

Perhaps I can do this because I see no need to repeat achievements on other characters. I have already unlocked the dyes, why do I need the achievement again? This frees me to develop and play them as I see fit. Which is why I enjoy my off mains more so than my mains at times.

I have 8 characters but 5 characters who get most of the playtime.

My main, the Vestige, who I completed most of the game with, a Dunmer MagDK, PVE tank, PVP healer, and my crafter.
My assassin/thief, the Breton Stam Sorc who is my farmer and my main DPS.
My DPS/Tank Imperial Stam Sorc for when my friends and I want to farm gear in normal dungeons.
My Dunmer Stam Warden, who leveled at a magwarden healer before recently turning to stamina for PVP.
My Altmer MagSorc who languished for a very long time and only gets playtime when I want to solo normal dungeons or take another crack at Vet Maelstrom.

Have the old sorcerer I made at launch, then a templar I made and took to level 30 before quitting eso, came back almost two years later, sorcerer is main as in achievement hunter and crafter, has done more group content on templar healer however. Made an NB and DK before morrowind for future use then an warden leveled up warden doing morrowind and then took her to 50. A bit later I made an extra sorc, NB and templar and killed off the old bank alts. leveled up the NB and DK during witch mother, also did some leveling on other characters who was nice for the dungeon event, took the second NB to 50 during new life and hit cp 690, no more random dungeons for this one :)
Sorc, templar NB and warden is full characters. Dk and the 3 secondary is a bit lacking in skill points.

I have 11 chars. 8 of them are maxed out with gear and undaunted and most have mages and fighters guild. My first and second main are 9 trait crafters, only the 1st main knows the expensive motives though.

So I could say, I do both. Everything with my main and most with alts :p

    I don't think that way.
It's obvious I'll always feel sentimental about the very first character created in ESO. But I don't think about my other characters as "alts". I've been still levelling some of them up but I don't intend to make them mules for so called "main" one. Each one of them has separate story and walks a different path. and it feels different playing each one of them.. and I think it's awesome. But I am neither a completionist nor I follow the linear line of eso narration..so I always end up doing something new or make different choices with playing different characters.
    I have no alts.

I did 330+ skill points on 4 characters, one is at about 26K achievements with 360 skill points, the other 3 between 17.8-19.5K the difference being mainly Morrowind & CWC. The 5th is coming strong, with about 9.5K but only the alliance areas, mages & fighters guild as well as main quest done. I'm glad I spread my effort around a bit, fully trained skills and made multiple builds for all of them. Just stamina DK tank & DD would have been pretty boring.

I have one character i do everything on crafting, questing, pvp, everything. I have ults for every class leveled up but now just use for storage. my fav class is a magblade and i have just never been interested in another class enough to put the amount of time it takes to really make a good character. It reminds me of back in the day playing d2 i had all characters and somebody told me you should invest into 1 really good character instead of a bunch of mediocre characters. Just i have just put alot of time into one class trying to improve.

I have a main that I started with Morrowind and do basically everything on that character (Warden Healer.) I do have two dps characters (one mag one stam) and a tank as I am in a trials guild and periodically we need to fill a different role. My main is my crafter, pveer and pvper should I choose to go to Cyrodil.

While I /like/ my other characters, I prefer my warden healer and will always opt to play that character over another if given the choice.

I'm an "altoholic" with now 12 chars (leveled up three during New Life). Doing everything on just one I'd not only get terribly bored, it'd just not be possible.

You can't have a char that's good at questing, DPS, healing, tanking, stealing, dark-brotherhooding, vMA, and everything else, without MAJOR respecs all over the place all the time (including costly race change).

So I have one dedicated healer, one dedicated tank, and 10 DDs - one for each combination of class and resource. Not all of them are played actively all the time of course. Magicka Warden (Argonian) is mostly shelved, might become a second healer or tank. Also Magicka DK is shelved. Aside from that I play the chars as I feel like doing.

Also, some of them additionally are "specialists" for provisioning, crafting, enchanting, motifs, housing and similar things. I certainly don't level up / collect all that stuff on all chars. :)

Started out playing only one character, my magicka NB and crafter.

After a year, made a sorc and played him up to V4 before the ranks were shared. Barely played him after that.

During the anniversary event, created a DK and Templar and grinded them both up to 50 using the Cyrodiil town quests. Now I have a healer I routinely play on (and completed my first vet trial and collected Hist Sap skin with), and an alternate (and more powerful) DPS character. The Sorc still remains neglected.

I don't mind the motif thing, it's not problematic to log in the dedicated crafter when I need something in a certain style. Bag space is a little money sink, yeah.

Mount speed (or lack thereof) is certainly the most annoying thing on a new char. That's why I have a "running" gear set handy, 5 x Darkstride, 5 x Fjord's Legacy, all in well-fitted, max stam enchant on armor and stam recovery on jewelry, allowing for very fast and very persistent sprinting (especially combined with Rapid Maneuver, I think you even reach the sprint speed cap doing that) when I go do main quest or collect skyshards.

As long as you keep it on a casual level then it is totally fine.

Once you bring it on a competitive level PVE or PVP wise then the things changes a bit. As there are continuous adjustments to class skills and armor sets and sometimes your favorite class does't do the job anymore (I mean the job of being in top).

If your ultimate goal is to be NR1 or close to NR1 then going with alts is the answer - or temporarily leaving the game (as @FENGRUSH did)

Of course you have all crafting, transmuting, and such on one toon (typically your first.) This does not mean that the alts are useless. Balance changes are constant and what a particular race and class can do is so heavily messed with that it bears no relation to what was when you first created the character. I have a kajjit magica NB who was in a #1 leaderboard group at the end of 1.5. Do you think a Kajit magic NB could be a competitive Magica DPS anymore? I think not. These things change so much and so often. Even if you were trying to maintain a single play style you would have to frequently switch classes and sometimes races as ZOS stumbles blindly in the dark breaking some abilities and super buffing others.

The argument from class / race changes is only one arguement for alts. The strongest is probably ZOS propensity to put great rewards behind things that can only be done once per week / per day.

Lastly, there is the argument for different toons doing different rolls such as gank PVP (sNB), PVE DPS (msorc or stemp), PVE heals (mtemp), PVP anything group (warden), PVP 1vX (swarden), PVP tank (swarden,) PVE tank (DK). See, it goes on and on and all these suitability for roll builds may change tomorrow. The Warden PVP ones as well as the stemp for PVE DPS probably will as they are OP as hell.

I am currently worried for the future of ESO. Population seems like it is in free fall and the cancellation of the North America in-person gathering feels very much like pulling the plug. Kudos on fixing the in-game economy though. Clearly whatever gold shenanigans were happening the last couple years are fixed.

As a disclaimer... i care nothing for appearance other than the original face/hair/bodyshape i assign my guy. So transmog is unimportant to me when it xomes to equipmemt style etc.

I have 1 character my mage dk who i consider my 'main' who i do all quests on. But i have a stam and magicka dps version of every class. And a specific tank dk and a specific healer temp in addition to that.. So 12 in total. My primary healer is also primary crafter.

All 12 are max crafters in every craft and maxed all skill lines. And all have enough skill points to fulfill multiple roles and have crafts maxed for writs etc.

The primary reason i have all these maxed guys is for versatility in playstyle/gameplay.

Maybe i want to farm some piece of kit or a specifc dungeon or vma, or perform or counter a specific playstyle in pvp etc. And having all options makes it easier and fresher. Keeps i t interesting for me.

My mage dk has more achievements etc than anything else and like i said will do all quest in dlcs and such. I am a bit of a completionist. So you can imagine how punishing it is to gear correctly all 12 characters. Which i basically have now. Except a couple of spriggan sets need replacing by tfs but thats ok.

I also actually enjoy levelling up characters with all thier crafts, guilds, weapons and skill lines.

Basically the variety keeps it intersting, allows me to easily fill all roles without changing cp etc and makes it easy to farm things like gold keys and master writs.

But stilk consider dk my main and prefer achievements and completions on him.

I do both. My main is my trials DPS and Master crafter. I learn all recipes and motifs on it and I am attempting to complete all content on it. But I also have a tank and healer DPS for PVE. And then I have 9 PVP characters across all classes to match whatever mood I am in for PVP on a given day.

I had a main, who has all my crafting and other achievements. But that was pre warden.

I deleted a bunch of characters and made a bunch of wardens. Haven't settled on one yet but would like to.

I would much prefer to just play one character but some aspects of the game encourage use of alts. So I do to some extent. And it costing gold to change stats, skills, morphs, CP, you can't really do it all on one character anyway.

I would've left this game a long time ago if it wasn't for alts. I play them all half for PvP the other half for PvE and some for both. It keeps the game fresh and fun trying to master every class.
