I actually followed this guide -
https://www.reddit.com/r/elderscrollsonline/comments/3jjoql/are_you_having_fps_issues_wih_eso_on_a_pc_well/
and I went from barely reaching 40-50 FPS max to averaging 70-90+ FPS and going as high as 100+.
i tried this out of curiosity and i didn't get one single extra frame after it.
i believe that something wrong happened to the game in the last 2 days since it's no longer playable with the settings i was using until last friday.
i only see 2 solutions at this point: reducing all settings to low, or abandon the game and wait for a fix.
anyway, it's not something new, it's quite usual for the game to break during events. in the last year we had similar problems exactly during the same event.

Furthermore almost all of my games on steam that are under $10 run great.
The reason it's gotten better is due to the price increase in CS items and the implementation of CC's. More cash from the whales means this game is receiving unprecedented support. Oh wait, you said it gotten worse, which means all those "I like to help fund the game by paying $30 for that $10 mount ..." are null and void.
I'm now confused.

Most games on steam also don't have the moniker or money of a triple A title like this one. Don't defend ZOS for this one, they fudged up really bad a long time ago and either don't have the ability to fix it or choose to not spend the money on it, instead reskinning everything possible for all the TES fanatics to buy.

I haven't noticed anything recently but I certainly know how awful this game ran before I followed that guide, I could play wow in 4k on Ultra and still hit 50-60fps with draw distance, and shadows turned down, but as soon as I came to this game it just runs like ***. Shame it didn't work for you too.
Im sure you have tried it but have you checked vsync is off, particle suppression is at minimum (35 I think is lowest), and view distance is 50 or lower, (turning my view distance up from 50-100 halfs my FPS instantly).
I also have ambient occlusion off as this massively impacted me by like 10+fps and made the game look a lot brighter and nicer with it off.
I've had the odd turkey performance-wise from Steam, but no performance issues with ESO since PC (EU) launch (although I don't use the Steam version). A fairer comparison would be with other MMORPGs, and it runs as smoothly as any for me and better than most.

Never had an issue with swtor, only issue ive had there was the pay2win model in having to have the expansions to level pass paywalls. Always ran smooth as it can be considering being in Australia. We notice a bad server pretty quick and are pretty tolerable to server lag. But hiw bad eso is atm is why most oceanics just end up leaving
Best servers ive ever had was guild wars 2 on pc. Serves half a world away and still felt competitive and very rarely suffered lag (even in wvw in a large group of 50+ people on their tier 1 servers) on eso you have a 5v5 and your nearly guaranteed either a DC, a load screen or skill freezing.... Which is a joke
Wow, you must've been gone from SWTOR awhile. The Aussies are raging after the latest server merges, understandably. Also, there were at least two US servers that had a tendency to fizzle out nearly on a nightly basis (this being in the past oh six to eight months).
Really hard for those on those servers.
The ESO servers are light years (heh) better than SWTOR from where I sit. Only time I get disco'd is during our nightly router reset.

Will goign form a 10 year old sATA harddrive to a new ssd improve my game quality?
i have an i5 oced to 4 hz, gtx970 and 16 gb ram
i jsut bought the ssd but still need to isntal it and re-isntal everything (not looking forward to it)
In short, cheaters forced calculations on to servers, this killed performance. Most games on steam also don't have the moniker or money of a triple A title like this one. ESO performance issues are largely missunderstood.
I've been playing for nearly 3 years, and server performance has only been getting better and better. The last time I saw a rollback happen, was for a few hours when Orsinium came out, when ZOS first made a zone that you could visit regardless of level, so it make sense it was a tad buggy.
The last 3 or so times that ESO was completely impossible to access this year, it was not because of ZOS' servers, but because of nation-wide internet outages and routing issues from Comcast and AT&T.
The performance issues that ESO does have seem to come from how much it relies on the 1st core of your CPU, and how much particles can affect your ping.
Also, I have personally found a lot of issues when using an HDD, rather than an SSD. Gina has also explained to us that the recent endless loading screen bug was caused by a single texture failing to load, because of how the ESO client draws texture data from your files.
The issues are there, bu it's important to understand where the issues come from, rather than just point at ZOS and scream "Game broken please fix"

Factor in 4 people sharing that over WiFi, and it's not hard to imagine why people have bad fps...

I have seen numerous performance issues due to add-ons. Now, I have a select few that I run that I have tested extensively with no issues.
AUI, LUI are two that I have seen issues with... so before anyone blames ZOS, you ought to first take a look at what addons you are running.
DarkUI performs flawlessly!
