New player with mobility issues - suggestions wanted

Hi all,

I just purchased the base game last week for PC. In most MMOs I play with my husband and put him on auto-follow a lot because using the arrow keys or WASD keys to move causes not only hand pain but arm, shoulder, upper back and neck pain. I now see that auto-follow is not available in this game. Normally my next course of action is to use the mouse to move instead of keys. In the games I have been playing (LOTRO and EQ2) both allow mouse-only movement, but since combat is mapped to the mouse in ESO, I can't figure out a way to move with the mouse. Does anyone have suggestions beyond buying another device? I'd like to make it work with my normal keyboard and trackball mouse. I'm fine with using keys for combat if there is a way to re-map the combat to the keyboard instead of the mouse.

that is easy to do,
go to controls section when in game
disable the combatfunctions from the mouse
then give your movement functions to the mouse
then give your combatfunctions new or other keys as prefered

Basically you can reassign movement to the mouse, yeah, though you'll possibly run into some "too few buttons" issues there.

For basic movement you'll need to get at least forward and back on the mouse, possibly on the left and right button. Next would be strafing left and right, and you'll probably also want sprint, crouch and jump.

You would probably need to get an MMO Mouse, one that has a bunch of buttons on it.

I have similar issues with the Keyboard unless I use something like this

Which I recently stopped using due to a new chair that did not have the proper arms to use. Now I use this

In either case the goal is to be sitting comfortably in my chair, have my arms resting comfortably on the arm rests and the keyboard/mouse placed just under my hands and fingers without having to reach for it. If I have the keyboard on my desk, 30 minutes is all I can game.

Have you tried using a game controller like one for the Xbox? Not sure if you would experience pain using one of those, but it might be worth a shot. The PC version does have a Gamepad mode.

I agree with the comment above about trying a controller. If joystick movement works out better, then another option is something like this: https://www.razerzone.com/gaming-keyboards-keypads/razer-orbweaver-chroma

That still allows use of the mouse with the other hand, but has a joystick that can be used with the left thumb and mapped to WASD arrows.

You can also use Autohotkey to remap keys, it will allow you to use combinations like clicking LMB + RMB will hold the forward button untill you press it again etc. No need to buy new controlers and it gives more options than any gaming stuff you will find on the market.

I'm so glad you posted this question, I'll be considering some of these options myself. I too came to ESO from LOTRO and it's a brutal transition with neurological issues and no autofollow or mouse driving. I might look into a gaming mouse myself now. Thanks everyone!

I know you said you don't want to buy another device but a controller just might solve your issues. I have problems with my hands, wrists, elbows and shoulders. The mouse and keyboard was just too painful after an hour or so. I switched to a controller and I can play for hours on end. I play in the livingroom in my comfy chair on a laptop with the controller resting in my lap and it's ideal for me. It might work better for you, too.

An add-on. The base game allows you to remap most functions, but to a single key or button. The add-on allow you to map functions to key combos.

Which controller do you use?

@Zaandal I just use the regular xbox controller for windows. I remap the d-pad because I don't like the way it is setup.

I'm a disabled gamer myself thanks to a drunk driver. Best thing in the world I have found is the higher end mice that have numbered, programmable buttons on the side. Here's what I use:

And one of these mouses with the Autohotkey add-on will make things even easier for you. For example, you can map Mouse Button (MB) 6 for any function, and Ctrl+MB6 can be something completely different.
