There are people who think community service is great even though in this case you aren't making the community any better by picking up books. But community service rendered comes with a badge of service or whatever that has to be earned for the badge to have any value. People who want to skip community service by paying out $$$ I don't see a problem with that. Really what's the difference between loading an addon and picking up books and paying money for mage lvl 10 other than if mage level 10 could be bought then all mage book hunting that came prior would lose badge of service value.0

Nobody is a fan of getting the books, it's extremely unfun
Sometimes you have to put in some amount of work to get something you want, therefore earning that thing. So in the case of the books you are putting in the work to get Mages guild level 10.
That is how games are supposed to function. Everything shouldn't just be handed to you, that removes all value out of achieving anything or obtaining anything in the game. Might as well go play Hello Kitty1
