Crown Gems: A big slap in the face for ESO Plus members?

Greetings!

Let me just be clear about one thing here. I can see arguments for and against this topic. So by no means do I think my current point of view is absolute and correct. But I want to hear what people think as a whole. This is a sort of ranty discussion, so please read everything before replying, so you can at least see where Im coming from.

I know microtransactions in ESO are generally cosmetics, convinience and other none "p2w" aspects. But that doesnt mean its immune to criticism

So since I came back, maybe 2-3 weeks ago, there has been a lot of changes while I was gone. Mostly changes Im quite pleased with. Ive always been a subscriber to ESO, and when ESO plus came out, Ive been keeping that active everytime I play. I thought it was worth it, and it still is. However one thing bothers me, and I guess the whole thing with loot boxes coming under fire, was what made me realise something.

Every new damn mount and outfit, and pretty much all the newest cool stuff, are being put into crown crates, while crowns still only has the old and dusty stuff. That kinda pisses me off. By no means do I think crowns are useless now. There are still PLENTY of things you can spend it on. But for someone like me that likes cosmetics and mounts in MMOS, this is a giant slap in the face. Pretty much all the best stuff gets packed in lootboxes now.

And yes, you can spend crowns on lootboxes, then buy a mount(1) once you have spent x amount of dollars on lootboxes, but how much do you need to spend? I highly doubt 1500 a month will get you anywhere NEAR what you need for 1 of these things.

To me, these gems are just a way to reduce the value of crowns that are given to plus members, then pack all the best stuff away in RNG gambling boxes. I think thats a disgusting business practice. You made ESO Plus members gain crowns, you cant just change your mind, and make a work around so every new content in the store isnt available to us anyways.

These gems would NEVER have been introduced if ESO Plus members didnt get crowns, then these lootboxes would simply use that.

Perhaps Im overthinking this. But honestly its these kind of small practices that escalates into what we now see in games like battlefront 2. It's something that needs to be taken into consideration. Just because its all cosmetics, doesnt mean it can't be flawed. Everyone has different values.

Thanks for reading

The crowns were a trade off to give players a chance to get items they wanted and overcome the fact that you can't sell or trade items (thus duplicate items would be wasted).

Gems are a great thing in my opinion and were (until the new tier of radiant items) one of the few good things ZOS had done in regards to crates.

I think the biggest issue with the ESO+ subs and the crowns that come along with them are the ever diminishing return of those bundled crowns. The problem with the fluff in the CS is two fold too. Like you said, all the cool stuff is being put in CC's and what does appear in the CS a large part of that is only there for a limited time and at an increased price.

The entire CS model is becoming nothing but a car crash. There's next to nothing consumer friendly about it.

It’s funny. When the flame atronach crates were announced, people complained that there WEREN’T any new costumes in them.

Each crate season has its themed mounts, but new mounts outside the theme are still released for crowns. I don’t think any crown crate has ever featured a new costume. Costumes have always been sold for crowns first. Hats are the only thing I think your complaint is actually true for.

Maybe an EU gambling ruling will change the way things work though, who knows.

zen team, please dont copy "Perfect World's" nasty Paywall, otherwise many will stop buying. we dont like greedy business tactic and this is all about having fun to play.
just stay on right track and keep players happy.

as long they are happy, they are tend to buy more if price are cheap and reasonable, but dont increase the cost.

Well it actually has. Last season got sheogorath's costume. You couldn't buy it with crowns in the store, it's never been offered.

I don't see it being a slap particularly in the face of plus members.

It slaps all users equally, imo.

crown crates are like gambling, people are addicted to it and zos wants to exploit this feature. Usual purchases are not that lucrative for them, but keeping in mind that this stuff is just a bunch of bits, they want you to be hooked not as shopaholic, but as gambler addict. Because for gambler it doesn't matter what will be the prize, he loves the process...
I actually surprized, why they are not allowing online poker sites, but all possible crates do exist in all MMOs. Do they think that unstable teen will be strictly against the gamble, while 21+ cannot handle the load? Or may be this is the conspiracy and they have an agreement with casinos to prepare future gamblers for them? Who knows...

I think that people seriously need to play a true pay-to-win game then come back here and complain about cosmetic items in crown crates. I have played games where you will ALWAYS lose against the pay-to-win players, players who spend $10,000 playing the game(you think I am joking...I'm not). As far as I am concerned they can throw whatever cosmetic items they want into crown crates and the crown store and I just...don't...care. Just imagine if they made new VMA-type weapons(except three times better) and put them in crown crates as an apex reward....who cares about cosmetics really?

    Buy the crown crates.

Get stuff you might not want. Costumes/pets/mounts you might not want but don't have will instantly be bound forever in your collections.

Get duplicates of costumes, pets, mounts you already have and you'll get gems. Decide you don't want all the consumables that are the only items you are guaranteed to get in a crown crate and you can trade them back for gems.

You can then use the gems, when you accumulate enough, to buy items in the crown crates that you want. Unless you want one of the special super rare apex rewards that can't be bought with gems.

The gems were honestly the only thing in my mind that made me able to stomach crown crates. Don't get me wrong, I am guilty of buying a fair few. That said, the new tier of mounts that can only be found in crates pretty much nullifies all of that.

Ive played pay 2 win games myself. ANd a lot of people cares about cosmetics. Like I said, everyone has different values. And its not only about that, it's about the principal of their business practice. It's not just black and white.

Fortunately, I appear to be immune to the gambling bug. There's even a local casino that I never visit.

And I also don't care about cosmetics very much, so I still have many thousands of crowns left over from ESO+. I don't spend 'em.

But it's been sad watching the steady erosion of game quality due to monetization schemes.

Why would I buy anything I didnt want? That sounds dumb

Let them (ZOS) have their income. All you can get from crown crates are just cosmetic items. You want to gamble for it? Go ahaed be my guest. I am paying subscription fee since the very start and I have to say i do not feel any injustice from use of jewels/crates.

I always just viewed crates as another thing to spend my crowns from the subscription on. Crates don't impact the value of plus at all imo. If I wanted them and I didn't have plus I'd just have to buy crowns separately, spend the same amount of money for the same amount of crowns, but i would then not have access to all dlcs or the much more important craft bag.

Wow, people arguing over store v. crates. For perspective, when was the last time a mount was added to the stables that could be purchased with gold?

Some casinos have restaurants or buffets that are very, very good, and the price is typically dirt cheap. If you aren't a person with an addictive personality, it's worth a trip to see if your casino fits the mold (not all do).

They usually either die a violent death, fade into obscurity or become the niche haven for people I would avoid socializing with.

I unwittingly played one P2W game, leveled up, went into their version of battlegrounds and was instantly vaporized. Found out that it was all about buying gems to add to your weapons, etc.

I will never do it again. I'll play asteroids first.

They want you to spend your 1500 crowns on crates and when you don't get what you want to buy more crowns to try and since you already spent so much and still not get what you want might as well go all in until you do so your previous mobey doesn't feel like a waste

    Complete exploitation
