  You can do any of those. Pick one that you like!
  
  Tanks focus on having high health, high damage resistances, and taunting and crowd control.
  Healers focus on healing and buffing their group, doing damage on the side.
  DPS focus on dealing as much damage as possible while staying alive.
  
  Templars that focus on magicka have a lot of skills that lean towards healing. You'll find healer to be a very natural fit for a magicka-focused Breton Templar. Healers use light armor and a restoration staff.
  
  Templars can do quite well as DPS. You've got a lot of abilities that heal you as your do damage. If you are magicka focused, you'll want a destruction staff and skills that do damage. Magicka goes light armor. If you are stamina focused, you'll want weapons (bow, dual wield, two-hander) and to pick Templar skills that will morph to cost stamina. Stamina goes medium armor.
  
  Templars can do well as a tank. Those self-heals will make you a beast and let you buff your group. You'll want heavy armor and one-hand and shield weapons. The first skill in One hand and shield is an excellent taunt.
  
  Now, advice for leveling.

  • DPS/Tank/Healer? - Lean towards DPS for overland questing as you level. Having more DPS will make this go much easier. If you want to run random dungeons, however, tanks and healers have a much shorter queue time.
  • Armor? - The most important thing is to keep your armor close to your current level so that you benefit more from the battle-scaling you to CP 160. I level with random pieces of dropped gear, or I ask guildies/friends to make me training gear.
  • Weapons/Staffs - Your weapon/stamina skills get better the more stamina you have. Your staff/magicka skills get better the more magicka you have. So its beneficial to go one or the other. Hybrids can be viable, but one or the other is more effective.

  I've leveled 2 1/2 templars, all Breton. Here are some thoughts, for starters:

  • Much of the (very old) general advice in http://tamrielfoundry.com/topic/general-tips-for-new-or-returning-players/ still applies.
  • In groups, templars make great healers. They're also good in other roles, but they shine at healing.
  • It is always wise to use different skills at different times as you level. Templars are no exception to that rule.
  • A fun and fail-safe approach to leveling and playing magicka templars is to always have one lightning staff bar and one restoration staff bar. That works when soloing and also when healing in dungeons.

  
  Key skills for the lightning staff bar (when you unlock them, of course) include:

  • Lightning Blockade (morph of Wall of Elements). Always use this. Everybody agrees.
  • Reflective Light. I always use this (even when healing). Not everybody agrees. Some even favor the other morph.
  • Luminous Shards (the better morph for groups). This is an amazing skill. It does good damage, plus it provides resource return that greatly helps teammates.
  • Puncturing Sweeps. Always use this when your role is doing damage. I usually leave it off when dungeon healing.
  • Elemental Drain. Somebody should bring this in group play, and it's expected of the healer. Also useful in tough solo situations.
  • Purifying Light. Excellent for boss fights when other members of your group do good damage.
  • Radiant Glory, aka "Jesus Beam". I favor the morph that returns health. I usually don't find room for this on my skill bars when I'm healing.

  
  If you have to move one of these to your resto bar for space reasons, Jesus Beam is a good candidate. It doesn't benefit from the lightning staff's buff to AoE, and you only use it in the last portion of a fight.
  
  Key skills for the restoration staff bar include:

  • Breath of Life. Particularly skilled healers get by without this. Everybody else should equip it while healing.
  • Healing Ward/Ward Ally. When healing groups,, this is somewhat redundant with Breath of Life. I tend to run it anyway (usually Ward Ally).
  • Mutagen/Rapid Regeneration. Both morphs are good. Crucial when healing groups of 4. Also good when soloing.
  • Ritual of Retribution/Extended Ritual. Ritual of Retribution is nice when soloing tough fights. There are dungeons where it's crucial to run this, but those are the more advanced ones I haven't done yet. I wind up not finding room for it on my skill bar.
  • Channeled Focus. A wonderful skill, but only if you can safely stay in one place. It isn't always on my bar when healing.
  • Healing Springs. A wonderful healing skill in large groups. In groups of 4, I sometimes leave it off my skill bar.
  • Combat Prayer. A wonderful buff skill in large groups, as well as doing some healing. In groups of 4, I sometime leave it off my skill bar.
  • Harness Magicka, especially when soloing.

  If you have "front" (damage) and "back" (healing/buff) bars, as I would advise you to, it's likely that most of your experience from killing things will come while you're on your front bar. So you probably should flip to your back bar when handing in quests, and also right before a dolmen crashes down.

  The good news is that you can almost just be all three the differences are mostly in the gear and your bars.
  
  Healer and DPS have all magicka stats so that is the same. The difference is that healers wear support sets and put more support skills on thier bars. The gear makes the biggest difference between them. DPS clears the quests nice and quickly and a healer very quickly finds a group for Daily dungeons and pleadges ( a level 45 thing)
  
  Tank is tricker but you don't actually need to focus on hp.. my templar tank is a magicka tank with most of my stats on magicka still. Then I use Heavy armor with Health and Tri stat enchants to reach 35K hp and 15K stamina. (27K mag). As a Breton with Shadowrend and Sets with Mag regen set bonuses I have really insane magicka regen, which means I can just repeatedly shield myself rather than trying to block everything... just the big hits.
  
  Level up and enjoy questing first then come back when you are level 50 and cp 160.
