External SSD Recommendation for XBox?

Which brand/size would you recommend for improving the Xbox One performance? I’m looking to purchase one on Black Friday. I’ll probably wait several months before purchasing the One X and hope that adding a SSD will provide some game play improvement in the interim.

Thanks!

I am partial to Seagate myself have a 3TB drive connected to my Xbox ...pretty much anything with USB 3.0 will work fine though. The requirements from Microsoft are pretty basic everything after that is personal preference on your part.

You spend $17,000 on a drive for your Xbox?

    https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIAAEE50A3271&Tpk=3tb ssd

OK, the above was one of the first ones out in that size, but even a 4TB SSD Today is $1500

    https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA12K4ND8237&cm_re=4tb_ssd-_-20-147-566-_-Product

You have a 3TB Platter Drive.

Speaking of Seagate, if you're partial to them and "official" products, they make one...I was considering it, though there are cheaper options.

Perchance might one know if the tested units (or all SSD's in general) are all compatible with the xbox? I have 3 external drives (none SSD), a 1TB WD and a 1TB Samsung as well as the 2TB Seagate, and I think its the Samsung that wasn't compatible...I remember finding out, after the purchase, that not all were compatible via a list on Xbox's site.

Yup my bad.. @Nestor I totally missed the "ssd" in OP's question...was just advising on a traditional external hd

I use a 500 GB Samsung T5 SSD hooked up to my X1X. Working great so far.

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B073GZBT36

You can go cheaper with an OEM SSD and an external enclosure, but these days I'm more interested in reliability, warranties, and costumer service than I am saving a few bucks up front.

The Seagates are good, and do have good transfer speeds. SSD's are nice but they are not cheap enough yet for mass storage. I was hoping your post was an indication that they have gotten cheap enough....

If it's USB 3 then it will work. eSata ones won't. The Samsung was probably a USB 2 or one of the early funky USB 3 ones.

-From actual testing Seagate is better in their 1TB -3TB models via USB 3.0
-WD - Western Digital is slower and can cause things like textures not to load during gameplay
-the Samsung T3 SSD is the fastest plug n play I've used
-I've heard good things about some HD enclosures that plug in the wall and use usb 3.0 but cannot make any suggestions from lack of personal experience on those in this game. They work great for media files

Those are the models that have the highest transfer speeds as, for one, the USB system does not give all that much current, at least not for a HDD or SSD enclosure. Although I would imagine an SSD would have lower power usage.

But, yes, the best externals for performance are the ones that get their power from the Mains and the USB is only for data flow. Those are not cheap unfortunately, especially with an SSD in them

I have an ssd, you will not notice much performance improvement within eso because most of the content is accessed on the server. Your xbox bootup and game start will be faster and games based on local saves will be faster.

Interesting. There have been a few threads re: SSD's here lately and many on xbox were reporting drastic improvements. I wonder if there's another variable in the equation.

I have a Seagate too. The only thing I would add to all this is that its probably best to get one that powers off the Xbox and doesn't use an external power plug.

@Eddyble I don't think their comment is completely accurate.
The HD does impact loading but I think they believe the files are coming from the server in some cloud based type of processing. There is a lot that comes from the local HD, enough that a faster HD improves performance especially in terms of textures.

Its exactly why the Xbox One X has a much faster HD than all other xbox one models and why companies give SSD load times vs internal HD load times on xbox One games.

Its makes enough of a difference to buy a faster external HD than the internal speed. For the xbox one x tho, I've found that only the Samsung T3 SSD is faster (based on what I own but not for all HD's)

    Nonsense.

The server is just telling your client *what* to load. The vast majority of the assets are loaded from disk (textures, audio, etc.). Every time you hit a load screen, the SSD is going to speed up asset loading. With the SSD I see significantly shorter load screens, and don't experience blacked-out player figures or texture pop-in nearly as often.

@NewBlacksmurf & @LiquidPony , thanks for the input. Thus it seems the consensus is still that the SSD is very beneficial. I guess I'm gonna go with the Samsung unit as Best Buy has it on sale and I have some coupons to use. Probably pick it up on my way home tonight. :#

That Samsung looks good, but I wonder if it’s larger than I really need. Would a 250-300 GB model work as well?

Good Question, but as the difference is about $75.00, I think the value is there for the 500 vs the 250. At least for me.

I believe you need a minimum of 256 GB.

The thing is, ESO is like 85 GB or something like that. Probably be 100 GB before long. I only installed 4 games on my X1X SSD (ESO, The Witcher 3, BF1, Destiny 2), and that used up 200 GB.

I would've gone with 1 TB but there's a huge price increase there.

I'm also thinking about a Samsung for my PS4 hopefully it will enhance my eso, it claims to but I am a little tentative because I recently upgraded my router to appease my household because I have to switch off all wifi to be playable but it didn't help
I only need a 500g for performance not really space

    Just an update,

I went with a Samgsung 500gb ssd "T5" and there was an immediate noticeable difference. everything is overall faster. BUT, it does not make you immune from all ongoing issues. During high traffic times in high traffic areas I still got the current invisible character load issue. it was for a shorter period (1-2 sec vs. 3-5) and when they populated they did so all at once. but, no real lag, most textures filled in properly and quickly, a lot more little things just overall better. Worth the purchase, more so than an xbox one x...and the value is there. $150 vs. $500.
