Didn’t BDO kill eso? Or was it fallout 4 that killed ESO?

Or was it the game going from sub to B2P that killed it?

Poor ESO always being killed they should use impen trait and L2P

No @FloppyTouch, you're thinking of Wildstar which decisively brought itself to it's own knees in weeks, followed closely by Neverwinter, which crippled ESO irrevocably by competing in a different market space.

    Again ?

In this forum ESO dies 3 times a week, at least.

In addition the steamchart seems fine, although I know lots of people who don't play ESO over Steam, me included.

...unfortunately, so far as I can tell, Zenimax isn't a public issuer (unlike Activision - WoW, and EA - TOR). Hence, no regular updates on revenues or subs, although to be fair Activision and EA have not been terribly forthcoming in their filings either, just some occasional morsels of information.

According to http://igcritic.com/blog/2016/03/17/most-played-mmorpg-games-of-2016/, ESO was #3 on the list of most played MMOs in 2016 with "250k people playing simultaneously", presumably across all platforms. I would suspect that even if the actual number is, say, 200k active subs, even a 20% year-on-year decline will still pull in a pretty healthy total sub number globally. Of course, there is a different discussion to be had as to how many of these are paying subs (and what kind - ESO+, microtransactions, etc.), but they've just rolled out Morrowind so clearly they anticipate some return on their investment.

Of course, there is a broader conversation to be had about long-term prospects for "classic" MMOs in the marketplace. To wit, WoW has been - according to Activision's investor reports, i.e. the "finance people" - experiencing significant declines for years because, and these are their words, of alternative types of multiplayer gaming (e.g. "5-minute deathmatch" type) taking away market share, especially in Asia. [I would also point out that, at least as of a couple of years ago, WoW in-game graphics looked awful compared with something like LOTRO or TOR, but whatever.] What happens ten or twenty years from now? I can guess, but it would be just speculation and could range from the very worst ("smartphone babies of today too ADD to play lore-based MMOs tomorrow") to the very best ("affordable high quality VR leads to renaissance of classic MMOs with ES and Fallout franchises leading the way"). I don't know. But to me it's an interesting discussion.

Is ESO dying this year or the next? To me, that is not an interesting discussion, because it boils down to - we do not and cannot know, but circumstantial evidence suggests "highly unlikely", end of story.

I don't play through Steam, like many others. That's one fact. And the second... in each and every MMO I played (WOW, SWTOR, AION, ESO) there was a recurring forums topic: THIS GAME IS DYING! If I had a dollar for each time I read that one, I'd be very rich. It happened in WoW for years... the game is still running, SWTOR had it from the day out of the gate and somehow is still around, same for AION, and thus...

NOPE! ESO IS NOT DYING. No more than any of the others. Please take the doom and gloom and re-distribute it to Diablo 3, they always have use for it.

I had the same issue (overlong loading screens and error 303 login timeouts), just reset your Master Merchant data and click the option for initialising MM after you already logged in. Believe me, stored data of almost 1 million sales is just too much :-)
