ESO dying?

Sounds like a PC problem. But the graphics are a little better so there's that. The bright side is you don't have massive que times for pvp right?

Pretty much every MMO has the same thought. Thats because after initial hype there is gradual decline with spikes around expansions and promos. The trick is to have as many new players as you have vets deciding they have had enough. It's why I always felt the champion point system is a bad idea. Catch up mechanics or not; last thing people want is to be chasing a moving goal line and getting smacked down while they do.

Kind of funny reading these comments, just goes to show that some people haven't actually created a new character and quested in awhile. As someone who constantly creates and deletes characters, I constantly see new characters in overland content all the time, so no, the open world of ESO is not underpopulated in the least.

Furthermore, this game is carried by PVE QUESTERS... 'PvE Endgame' and 'PvP' are both minorities in comparison to the players who are here to actually play the game- you know- the storylines, questing, crafting, etc. These players then create new characters, and play all over again, buying tons of stuff from the Crown Store along the way.

So before people begin to judge the health of ESO based upon 'PvE Endgame' and 'PvP', let's just remember where the MAJORITY of the players are, and they are not solely in either of those two groups.

I know the CWC DLC has caused some connectivity issues with Cryrodiil but prior to that the servers on 30 day campaigns is typically at cap. And i'm on PS4 which has never and will never be tracked via Steam number. Seems fine to me.

It is sort of good and bad to me. If they start raising equipment level as well it will be all bad. Because right now champion points sort of fills that roll. Usually in mmos power creep comes from new higher level equipment. Here there is no high level equipment to farm.

The bad side of that is as you point out. In other games you can catchup by skipping old tiers of equipment. Making you viable faster. Here there is no way for a new player to catch up quickly. Even if you make cp really fast it is still daunting as a new character to finding out you are 800 ‘levels’ behind.

Pretty sure the majority do more than one thing. The people that only do one thing are def in the minority. Which is why all aspects of the game are important. I absolutely hate people that say " so and so isnt important because most do so and so". Variety is important to the longevity of an mmo. Not focusing on soley one thing. People with your viewpoint are the reason why swtor died a horrible death when galactic command came out. You cannot keep an mmo afloat with only single player story content. It has been proven time and time again. And SWTOR is played by a lot of people who played KOTOR, so it is the same situation.

    Well, now I'm confused.
The point, that you admit to not seeing, is to discourage new and returning players.

This is fundamentally a good game; ruined by greed.

You're right, I guess it is designed to do exactly that. Thankfully I didn't see such a thread when I was deciding on giving this game another try, otherwise I would have missed out on this little treasure. Yes the crown store is about gaining profits, but many games are this way now. Two such games I played previously, GW2 and SWTOR also have this. Not saying it's good, but it's not a reason to not try or not like the game. Since the majority of items are cosmetic, it's avoidable.

I've given ESO a really tough time in the past - and I will do if I think it could do better, which is almost always the case and the source of my moaning :P But generally, its a really good solid game.

Yes - there is lag and performance issues. Yes there is a palpable lack of interest from he makers due to the non-communication.

But, if you compare the game now to what it was like in beta - it really isn't all THAT bad. The amount of content that has been added and KEEPS getting added is pretty staggering. And how many armour motifs are there now compared to the original 10 (9 original racial + Imperial racial) - we're on about 56? 57?

What I like is, if it ever didhit crisis levels, the gamecould very easily be overhauled without having to have an ESO2 or anyof that nonsense. I remember waaaaaaaaaaay back in the mists of time when the original Neverwinter Night s got a graphicaloverhaul with tons of new textures, armour, weapons, items added and some of the old lag causing bugs - pathfinding, collision detection, inventory database management -we're all given a much need overhaul. I played on a friends server in NWN from 2003 until 2013. I had planned to leave in 2009 but that overhaul (thanks to the newer technology) completely refreshed the game, and I stayed another 5 years :)

ESO is a much bigger, more beautiful game, built on much more solid software - when the time comes, I thoroughly expect the game will be overhauled. It is far too big a cash cow, to simply let die.

    Stupid thread is stupid.

You could have at least had the courtesy (and irony) to necro one of 100+ other "game is dying" threads instead of making a new one.

Whatever form, it will be around as long as they pay the light bill. There will always be people interested in playing, even if it's not as intense as it once was.

Im starting to enjoy this thread. Steam shows an average player base of 6000-8000 people. But we have the whole, me and my 3 friends don’t use steam so that sample size isn’t valid crowd.

As I said in another post there are lots of reasons the steam sample might not be valid. But size isn’t one of them. I would think it is by far the largest sample size I’ve seen. I would imagine it even dwarfs the amount of people active on the forums. By way of example if you were in 10 guilds and they were all full all the time, that is still less then the average amount of people logged in through steam. So please just stop with the amusing stories of how you and your guild of 600 are some how more valid.

    MMO games don't die suddenly.
    They slowly become ghost towns.

Look at Swtor, it finally server merged into mega servers that's a bad sign for that game since it had plenty of servers before I know ESO has mega servers but they had them since the start

So if anyone here had to guess, which has the highest population? PC? PS4? Xbox?

    My guess = PS4.

Why? Because PC players have other MMORPGs to choose from. Xbox players strike me as being more into sports and Call of Doody games.

    Is this correct?

In on ps4 and it's always had a lot of people in here. Always.

This happened because the population plummeted when the dev team decided to only focus on story content for an entire year, following the logic that the "majority" play story content. surprise surprise, when they did that, a massive chunk of the population left. Why? Because most people want variety. Luckily swtor has a new creative lead so they are getting a few players here and there back by releasing content for everyone. Pvp, story pve, endgame pve, etc.

Story content for a year didn’t really do it. Not alone anyway. They went that route and very casual and alt friendly; then ripped it all out and introduced command XP. Basically made an artificial grind for filler as they cannot even release a full raid in a patch. Have to do it 1 boss at a time.

I don't think it is "dying" while at the same time I wouldn't expect it to become anymore popular than it was with One Tamriel launch (can notice that point on the launch). One Tamriel was the best thing that happened to ESO and probably it won't happen again because dev's are clueless how they even managed to make such a success. To me it seems like many factors came together for this to occur:

    1) ESO had very high review rating. It was "Overwhelmly positive" and about 90% people liked the game. Right now recent reviews show under 70% satisfaction. I wouldn't buy such game, take it or leave it.

    2) ESO had better performance than now. There was big amount of bugs but not many gamebreaking. Loosing sound in Cyro or having infinite loading screen is a gamebreaking bug. It makes people want to leave the game.

    3) It was more attractive to new players. You could buy base game or gold edition and enjoy it without ESO+. It wasn't easy, I've spent a lot of time arranging my inventory, but it was still bearable. Right now? LOL! They added thousands of items, enlarged inventory for ESO+ users (i'm ESO+ too now) but did nothing with inventory of non ESO+ players. I can't even imagine the feeling of a new player who will get overwhelmed from the amount of items he is getting. And he won't even understand, what is trash and what is not. He will sell flowers to vendor while his inventory will be filled with 20 different style mats. He will spend at very least 30% of his gameplay time arranging his inventory.

    4) The heavy-attack + light weaving combat isn't attractive to new players. So to make a lot of damage I have to hit light attack before casting every skill to cancel animation? Wow that is strange... Will have to spam lots of heavy attacks? Wow this is boring! (Which are really buggy now btw)

    5) Teamplay was better. There were more synergies activated and it wasn't that hard as it is now. Only the players familiar well with the game can activate synergy. When I'm playing as a tank I see templar casting his shards and I'm ready to press the synergy button. After several tries I will succeed to do it. But what about the newbie? He simply got no chance for it. Synergies had to become really big part of the combat with special animations, roars, effects etc. Now a new player won't even understand what happened when he pressed that "Purify" button. Or what happened when he pressed synergy on sorc's Atro. Did Atro grow in size? Is he looking more dangerous? Nada.. no effect. Go google it if you wanna know what you just did.

All in all I wouldn't recommend anyone this game today as I myself not playing it the way I used to.

Anyone who is saying that he's not feeling the degrade in popularity of ESO either isn't honest or blind. On some platforms Cyrodiil is totally dead. On PC-EU where I play I always join within seconds. No waiting time. I remember once, long time ago I was looking at 100 people waiting queue. It was over an hour of waiting. And campaigns were filled with players. Do you remember?

So the chart shows an upward trend of players and that means ESO is dying? Early on around 1000 players on steam, in the past 30 days it's averaging 13k.

You can also see 2 peaks. One for One Tamriel and one for Morrowind release. It's normal to have higher player counts around releases of new content.

And as others said, most of the PC players play on the ESO client, not Steam.
