Xbox one X - first impressions

based on about 35 minutes this morning PRE - CWC Update . so what im comparing here is The xbox elite (1tb) vs the xbox one x
(clearly post update it will be very different!)

GFX - exactly the same
FPS - seems to have improved by about 2-5 fps (a guestimate) - seems much smoother
speed - area load times improved by 1-2 seconds.

Doesn't the update add most of the optimisation and improvement though so you won't notice as much until CWC is live?
Great question! In almost every case on Xbox, the limiting factor is the CPU, not the GPU, as ESO tends to be more on the CPU-intensive side of things, especially in trials. The changes made on the Xbox One X are mostly just GPU-side improvements so that we can make use of all the extra horsepower, which Microsoft gave us a lot of.

For the CPU side of things, we made a big change to our scene graph this patch which is expected to improve CPU performance across the board on all platforms, something that PC players have already noticed when Clockwork City launched. We're continuing efforts on the CPU, which are focused mostly on moving CPU work to the GPU.

For memory, that's something we're constantly trying to improve, because we're well aware that running out of memory is by far the most common issue on Xbox. Something that all platforms are getting with the Clockwork City update is an update to our animation loading system, which on average saves several hundreds of MB of memory compared to pre-Clockwork City, which means that Xbox players especially should see improvements in stability. On the Xbox One X, they give games an extra 4 GB of memory to use, so even with the graphical changes we're making, we have more than enough memory left over that these situations should be greatly improved.

Do you guys even read? this is before the CWC patch has dropped, ie no new art assets, no 4k, non of the changes ZOS said would be coming in the PATCH that will drop LATER today!

Should have gone to spec savers...

Lol. To be really playable on XBO the performance would have to improve by like 200 % at least. Trials used to run so extremely choppy when I was on XBO that I couldn't bare it anymore. Now with a brand-new 2k Euro PC it's more or less alright. More or less...

That being said, I have absolutely no hope for you guys who are still on console.

    FGS dont you people READ!!!

this was a first impression of an xbox one x, with NO other changes and NO update... i even said IT WILL BE DIFFERENT WHEN THE GAME UPDATES

Now why this is was interesting for me - and i assume other people, as they may be running older xboxs and were wondering what the difference is between old and new, if nothing else changed but the hardware.

WHEN THE UPDATE ARRIVES, A PROPER IMPRESSION CAN BE GIVEN

does that make it any clearer?

It would be interesting to see how the pre-CWC is with post on the new system.

ESO in 4k HDR on PS4 Pro on a high end Sony TV is breathtaking. I buy Microsoft and Sony products. I hope Xbox One X gives its purchasers an equal, if not better, ESO performance with those 6 teraflops and all of that RAM!

Sorry but breathtaking is a bit of an exaggeration.... tboe only people that would consider eso at 4k via ps4pro on an hdr tv (4k mode has none of the graphical improvements) are those rhat have never seen true high fidelity visuals cranked up in pc hardware.

This is not some pc masterace comment. In fact i spend most of my time on my ps4 account vs my pc account. But visually, eso on the pro at 4k is hardly "breathtaking".

4k on the pro, while entirely effective, is only psuedo 4k via checkerboard rendering for all its 4k supported games.

XBOX has some games that are true 4k, forza 7 for example is true native fully rendered 4k while ff15 is going to use checkerboard technique.

Breathtaking is a relative term. Staring at the northern lights aurora in East March took my breath away. Therefore, it is breathtaking to at least me.

Also, PS4 Pro is 4k Native when not in 1080 enhanced....

I forgot to specify eso is the exception. I dont believe there is a single game witb pro support outaide of eso that runs at native 4k. Simply becuase most traditional AAA games are far more involved visually than mmos are. Whereas XBOX has on record at least 2 AAA games running at native 4k.

Xbox One X after the CwC update runs at native 4K and has all the graphics settings that the PS4 Pro has when running ESO at 1080 Enhanced. As was described by Zenimax the Xbox One X will offer graphics similar to the Ultra setting on a PC.
  • Galenus_of_Pergamon
@exeeter702 Yessir, not sure about the other PS4 titles. You could be correct and they could indeed upscale.

I thought the newest Tomb Raider Collectors Edition and Uncharted 4 were native, but I admit to not knowing this with a high degree of certainty.

I am a diehard ESO fan so I bought a PS4 Pro just for that game. PS4 Pro is not the best in the world, and while PC does provide a superior visual experience when you're willing to pay for it, consoles are starting to be like iPhones and Samsung Galaxy phone. There are shorter lifespans.

PS5 is strongly rumored to drop Q4 2018. We'll see.

Regardless, I am so excited to get home and play!!!!

Supposedly the PS4 Pro is running at native 4K in ESO like the Xbox One X but you don't get any graphics improvements. On the Xbox One X you not only get 4K, but you also get the features that are in the Pro's 1080p enhanced mode (SSAO + reflections), and a view distance boost.

Yeah I believe that to be the case. Im curious honestly, from what ive gathered from the one Xs technical achievements, it should be able to run more graphical bells and whistles that what is offered on the pros 1080p enhanced mode. Essentially i dont believe the pros enhanced mode is equal to PC ultra settings since i have the benefit of a setup that allows me to compare them side by side and both at 1080p, pc ultra looks markedly superior. Whereas zos is billing the one x patch to bring eso to complete parity to the pc version on ultra settings, im curious if this is fluff or 100 percent genuine.

Tbh i was a bit jealous when the specs were revealed for the one x. Making me wish sony waited a bit longer. But i belive it was intended, as sony is going to anounce a new PS model around Q2 next year.

People think its going to be a "ps5" of sorts but that is a major confusion and misinterpretation. Generation console entries for the most part are not a thing anymore.

What is happening, is we have reached a point where diminishing returns is kicking in on graphical fidelity to the point where the gap between 2 generations of consoles' graphiclal evolution is shrinking. To the point where a stand alone next gen console has less and less to really offer as time goes on. This is screen tech in color production and resolution are now front seat. Couple this with the standard architecture powering consoles now is basically mini pcs in the box which means game devs can easily more than ever before, create their game with a wide range of graphical scaling to accommodate which console it will be played on.

The next PlayStation is simply going to be another one x with some more muscle, or added features, thus it will simply play games at a visually superior setting while still belonging to this "generation" of the avaialble video game library. I dont belive they will call it a ps5 as that would confuse casual consumers in thinking that it is an entirely new platform which it most definitely is not going to be.

    Interesting points, here.

My general perception is Console -> Two Years Passes -> Slim version of console with minor enhancements -> One and a Half to Two Additional Years Pass -> Plus or X version of console releases (like Iphone S models) -> One to Two more years pass and then the next generation of the console is released.

So a 2019 will adhere to that pattern. Here's what some analysts think as of today (11.07.17)...

ok so got home, downloaded, then had to pop out. just got in.

so far , ive managed about 10 mins.

the game has crashed 4 times.
ive had to quit it because of "unusually long loading times" so is now rebooting for a 5th time.

    the water looks great.
    the draw distance is improved.
the load times if they have immproved , its not noticable
    it SEEMS a little smoother.

otherwise, everything else looks EXACTLY the same as what it did on my old xbox over the xb1x.

right now, im thinking the xb1x is a huge waste of money.
