With the MASSIVE announcement from Blizzcon this weekend, the next ESO chapter needs to be enormous if they want to maintain any kind of a player base. I'm getting tired of this 'new content' that's always the same thing; new zone, motifs, quests, dungeons, maybe a trial, etc. They need to add some content that lasts more than a couple weeks. I am definitely going back to WoW, hope to return to ESO if they ever give me a reason to

lol, the people that play ESO and seriously enjoy the game, aren't going to be leaving to go play WoW, only the people that are finicky will leave, ESO has been told time and time again that the game will die, but each time, it doesnt

You can never go wrong with more zones. The more, the merrier.

Also, what Blizzcon announcement? As a matter of fact, what’s a blizzcon?

I had a conversation with my boyfriend about that Blizzcon announcement. Both of us are ex-WoW players, I played from just before Cataclysm till Pandaria and he played from vanilla till Pandaria. As always with the new expansion Blizzard tries very hard to implement lots of changes, such as level scaling, HOWEVER, the game is very old now. If it was a World of Warcraft 2 that was being presented, we would be back in a heartbeat, however, no matter what you do, an old engine remains an old engine. WoW is nice memories, but nothing else anymore. I don't think you'll see a mass exodus for it.

Who said anything about needing a P2W expansion? They just need to add some things that give people to do that already have BIS gear

I agree, the Blizzard announcements were discussed at length in 2 of my guilds last night. The general consensus is that a handful of people will spend some time there, mostly the same people that go back to WoW for a week or two after every update. Nobody plans to make a serious move back to WoW though. At most, I think there will be a temporary player reduction in ESO.

I don't think many would ever retreat to world of Warcraft . Only people already invested there maybe . There are too many beautiful games to choose besides WoW's outdated graphics . ESO has a loyal following and even though some of Us have gone on hiatus elsewhere , many are still hoping for ESO improvements attracting Us back to parts of the game we love . There are no hard feelings from me that sometimes Dev direction goes on a different path then some prefer . Just waiting until Our likes match again to dive back in head first and having fun . No need for drama or ultimatums .

Unfortunately they're couple of years too late.
Couple of years ago I would've jumped straight in but now the game is just too old and I have no interest in getting back to it.
Even though vanilla WoW was amazing back then, it wouldn't be the same anymore.
Nostalgia is nice and all but I'll pass, thank you.

Honestly I have tried to balance multiple MMO games before and it's not easy.

Unless you're just playing them for story content as it comes out then you start to fall behind the curve or or never get the extra stuff done because you don't have the time to invest.

To do dailies every day in multiple games is horrible.

Meh. Nothing was said at Blizzcon this year that would drive me in the World of Warcraft direction. Sorry.

However, they did reveal something interesting, even if it was not the main message. By releasing a "Classic" version of the game on a "Classic" server, they are admitting that their direction has strayed away from what is a better game. Even as they talk about new island zones for Battle for Azeroth, they are conceding that the orignal game was, in some manner, better than what they have today. Yes, this is being done to monetize the brand, but if it were not true, it would not be a good way to raise money.

ZOS and Bethesda would do well to take note. No, they should not release some retro server and squeeze revenue from players. Instead, going forward, they need to make sure that they are making the game better than it was, not just different than it was. When they look back and realize they were not making the game better, they need to take the game back to that, not bully forward and make the best of the situation.

EDIT: World of Warcraft has been bleeding players for years. Blizzard has no idea how to fix this. Obviously, releasing zones and expansions is not the answer. A retro server is also not the answer, but it does highlight how lost I think they are.

Instead, going forward, they need to make sure that they are making the game better than it was, not just different than it was.

Old World of Warcraft had a lot of grind. Something like at level 35 you'll run out of quests completely, meaning you'll spend time killing wolves to level up. You had to train each weapon up individually, meaning if you wanted to swap weapons, back to the endless killing of level 1 mobs you go. They had a lengthy attunement process for raids. One that would take you months to complete. Raids had no guaranteed loot at all. Meaning you could raid all of vanilla and not get a single drop.

If WoW was still like this today, it would be dead.

We remember it fondly, we remember the fights fondly because we have nostalgia for it. Another important thing to remember - WoW was the most casual friendly MMO with the least grind for the early days of MMOs. In comparison to all other MMOs at the time it was considered very casual friendly. Hence why it was mainstream. It never strayed from that path. The only difference is the kind of player that we consider a casual MMO player. With other games having de-leveling mechanics and it taking YEARS just to hit max level, being able to do so in around 2-3 month of heavy playing was heaven for the time. Today? Today 2 months would be considered on the long side.

So WoW changed as the player changed, but in the end it never lost its focus or its target.

By extending level scaling in WoW across the entire game, it sounds to me like Blizzard are more scared of ZOS than the other way round  ! It also sounds like the removal of PvP realms is a clear indication of huge realm mergers to come and those are always indicative of a major under-population problem. WoW might still have the best figures among Western MMOs, but we know that its population trend is moving in the opposite direction to ESO's and that must be a genuine concern for Blizzard - they're certainly taking some pretty decisive, and some would say desperate, measures to address it, with pretty lukewarm responses on the forums.

ESO is doing just fine, sure some players will switch to this or that game for a while as they always do, myself included (WoW being among them) but that doesn't mean they'll stop playing ESO or even suspend a subscription to it.

There's nothing in the Blizzcon announcement to make me more or less likely to dip in and out of WoW in the future, but this is my main MMO home right here and that will stay the case for a very long time.

I‘ve played WoW for about 10 years, put about one year of full 24h days in time (crazy!) into it and left after MoP. Never looked back.

Still meet up with my olden days guild in real life now and then.

Yesterday I‘ve watched the Blizzcon opening ceremony and have been surprised how bland the expansion seems to turn out. The Classic WoW announcement has stirred a lot of emotions and fond memories, but still over is over.

Maybe I‘ll give Classic a go for the nostalgia up to the point where I‘ll have to farm that Furbolg reputation for countless hours and hours again. But that will be it.
