Anyone play on a projector?

trashcannot
Was thinking of splurging on one, but there’s so many different reviews and specs that i’m a little overwhelmed. Anyone have input? I’m currently playing on a gaming desktop with a high refresh rate monitor, and am more concerned with latency than resolution.

Just go to amazon and read the reviews on various types of projectors. I found this in a matter of seconds

Projectors don’t just work well. You need the proper brightness for the type of ambient light, you need a good screen hopefully a tensioned one, you also need a gaming specific projector that doesn’t have lag (only an issue for pvp). I’d say you’re looking at 1k or so for a decent HD projector, and a few hundred for a good screen depending on the size.

You can have the best projector in the world, but if you have too much light in the room, then pointless.

What is the point anyway in this day of extra large monitors?

Yeah I'm using a 55" 4k when I'm not playing in VR and it looks amazing.

The only people I've ever known to own Projectors do so because of the nostalgia/cool factor... I mean yeah, I get it's "kind of" like the movie theater... but it's overall a waste imo.

Better to just invest in a solid 4k TV / Monitor and play on that. Less likely to have issues/lag etc. that way as well.

Whoa! Friend, let me stop you right there! Put your wallet back into your pants!

    Sigh...

I used to game exclusively with a projector, and it was AWESOME. Well, it WAS awesome, right up until the first bulb went bad, which happened after only a few months. Then I found out how much the damn replacement bulbs cost. It was almost half the cost of the projector! Totally insane. I sold the projector on eBay, LOL, and never looked back.

If you want to game on an 80" screen, just wait a few years. At the rate LCD panels are dropping, I'm sure Vizio or TCL will have one for $500 soon.

Uggh... Projector bulbs. Like the time they bought a nice one at work, used it day-in-day out for training and meetings, until the bulb went out and they got sticker shock. Had to wait a quarter an use the not-so-good old one until the purchase was approved. Anybody remember the DLP rear-projection TVs in the early 2000s? Great picture, big screen, didn't weigh a ton. They had a projector in the bottom that reflected off a mirror to get the image on the screen. And when the bulb had to be replaced, you had to be prepared for a surprisingly large bill.

Input lag is a very real thing on projectors. I wouldn't want to use one for PvP. Heck, not for PvE either.

Also, understand that the bigger the screen, the further out in your peripheral vision the various HUD elements are. You may find yourself having to sweep your eyes off the center of the action to see important indicators. Gaming is immersive on big screens but they don't necessarily help in fast-twitch situations.

Think about a nice curved monitor instead. You don't even have to go 4K; a 3440x1440 ultrawide is easy to drive with a good video card and very clear for gaming. Still great for putting your view "inside" the game, but much better performance than any projector.

Have been using benq 1080p for about a year now of course only late nights but it's amazing so I've screwed it to my ceiling and put it straight onto the wall no screen luckily it's flat white
Frankly I don't know why more people aren't using these rather than a big tv and it was half the price. The picture is fantastic and is adjustable in every way your tv would be (but 2.5metre wide)
Trust me go and see one and make up your own mind
    Aussie lag is real!

I play on an Optoma HD131X I've had nearly four years (my previous one was a crappy HD20 that constantly had problems). It's a great experience and I would never go back, but it is a serious investment. As established, light is an issue; your environment has to be altered to accommodate it. You'll want to replace bulbs every nine to twelve months to maintain good picture contrast. And realistically, a wall doesn't work, you'll want a screen or there's no real point in HD. Plus you need it on a table (where it'll get knocked around) or on the ceiling (where maintenance is a pain and lining things up just right difficult).

So basically, choosing between a projector and a TV is not like choosing because an Xbox or a Playstation, it's like choosing between a '69 Mustang and a "15 Chevy Malibu. You have to make some serious commitments, it's going to require more money and maintenance, and possibly is more machine than you really need. But if you are willing to commit, then there's no comparison.

    Honest suggestion.

Buy a really slim tv or one of those new wall paper Hd screens.

I’d highly advise against any projector for gaming. Projectors aren’t designed for the best high end gaming. It works but at the price point you can’t spend that on a nice 65-75 inch tv and there are more tv options vs projectors.

I have a projector setup and it's awesome. I have the Panasonic 1080p home theater projector and I never have any problems with frame rate or lag. And yes....playing eso on an 8 foot screen is as awesome as it sounds.

If you get a projector, don't be cheap and get one of those portable office ones. Get an actual home theater projector.

Be wary of ambient light. My projector is in a brightly lit room. Doing dungeons or pvp'ing from 2-5pm was impossible due to the sun hitting the room at that time of day. We had to order blackout curtains for every window in the room. So now I can game midday and it's fine. But we had to modify the window coverings which was an added expense.

This is my second projector setup...I had the old Panasonic 720 projector before this one. Ive always had a projector as my main tv. If you buy a quality home theater projector, the cost of the bulb is not a big deal. The average bulb lasts 4000 hours. If you watch 10 hours of tv a day, that's one bulb per year. Most people I know replace their bulbs every other year.

Here is a picture of what my typical gaming evening looks like on the Panasonic 1080p projector. Notice a few lights are on...but the quality of the picture is still great.

Here is a pic of the same room with more lights on. It does affect the quality/brightness. If you have a lot of light you can see how it can be hard to play.

Here is a pic of a brand new fancy 65' 4K/HDR tv for comparison...this tv, the sound bar, two wireless rear speakers (not pictured), an extra Xbox and a second 42' inch tv was still all cheaper than the projector + screen.

Simple. Space. With a nice set up you can tuck your pc away all wireless, projector on the ceiling and rather than use a pull down screen (op these are ***) get a 10ft mdf board buy "screen goo" which is cinema quality grade and boom barely any space used.

OP if you go down this route get a dlp not an lcd projector. Mitsubishi make some pretty good ones. Only downside to them in the real world is day time gaming where blackout blinds are a must and bulb life isn't great, you'll get about 100 hrs in a bulb before it dims. I used to xbox on one a few years ago.

With a proper projector and set up no monitor will come close to the quality you'll get. Oh and you'll need to splurge on a good surround sound and have digital audio outs on the pc.
