How to level these days?

Returning player here making a new character and trying to get up to level 50 fast.

I am trying to do it alone and must admit I really hated the farming I used to do. Just kinda curious what's the best way anymore?

Don't craft or stop to pick up stuff ... just kill and do quests. You'll get there in no time

My main isn't leveling fast because I'm doing every quest, every craft, grabbing all the skyshards, lorebooks and even emptying crates and barrels plus bringing up 3 other toons at the same time ... if you just focus on leveling you can have a max toon really easy really fast

Doing it solo id just do dolmens. Alkir or Auridon. Wear training gear and drink xp pots.

Yep, wear crafted gear with training. Do quests and random dungeons on normal. When you see a dolmen or a world boss, geve it some of your love. It took me a starter area and two further regions to bring a warden to 50.

    Grinding dolmens.

Alik'r Desert is favored because all three dolmens are close to wayshrines. Auridon, based on that criterion, is the runner-up.

And by the way -- there are some holiday events that grant double XP. The Halloween -- "Witchmother" one starts soon.

One advantage to grinding dolmens is that you get matched-set jewelry as drops, so you might want to do it for a couple of levels, then do other things while you're bored of it, and then go back to it after a while.

Also: The main quest is no longer level-locked, it still gives skill points, it still gives quest-reward experience, and it still doesn't give great gear that you'd want to wait until you were CP 160 to earn.

And there are still a lot of easy quest chains in various towns and cities.

Ur going to need a lot of skillpoints. Esp if u want to craft as well (u do).
My suggestion is to get into a large trade guild and port to guildmate to every zone possible. Then pick up all the skyshards and lorebooks and dont forget theres another 20ish+ skillpoints from cyrodiil skyshards.
Grabbing all the skyshards will net u a very decent amount of xp while getting the skillpoints u need.
I also suggest doing the prophet story line as each quest completion gives u a skillpoint.
If u still need xp after all this, start doing the main storyline quests for the zones. Every 2-3 quests gives a skyshard.
Also if u do only main quests and skip everything else u can blow through all of shadowfens main storyline and grab 4 skillpoints and massive xp.

Sont be cheap if u wanna level quick. Buy some xp pots. Even the 50% ones are a hugr time savor.
And level in all training gear.

It depends on how you like to level.

Questing: Pick a zone and quest in it. Main Quest, town quests, delves, skyshards, finish the map. When you are done, move on to another zone or use a different method. If you might roleplaying, this can really help inform your character's personality. It wasn't until I took my imperial stamsorc to level in the Rift that I realized she was probably doing the quests as an agent of Abnur Tharn and was way to shady to join the Companions. Storyline quests in the factions and the main quest give skill points, which are needed if you want to craft.

Dolmen grinding: Auridon and Alikr almost always have dolmen groups running. You also get really good exp for the first time you do a dolmen, so at about level 48-49, I usually finish off the character with dolmens because its fast and by the time I'm that close I'm usually ready to be done with it.

Killing things: Level up on killing things until you can handle a public dungeon. Then grab your aoes, and charge in. Public dungeons have densely packed mobs and so you can kill a lot of things quickly. If I have a friend who wants to level an alt quickly and I'm in the mood, I will group up with them and carry them through a public dungeon for a while.

Paying others to kill things with you: Skyreach runs. This is a good method for leveling alts quickly and a bad method to level a new character quickly, and it costs gold unless you have a good friend. Post in Craglorn zone chat that you want to buy skyreach runs. Skyreach is an instanced Craglorn delve where its possibly to gather most of the mobs in the dungeon into one small area and then your partner burns them all down with the destro staff ultimate. Its a lot of exp in a short amount of time, so Skyreach gives great bang for your buck, assuming you can pay for it.

PVP: As soon as you get to level 10, you can get into Cyrodiil or Battlegrounds. Kyne is the campaign for players below level 50, though you can join any campaign that you want. There are easy starting quests you can do which will unlock the start of your alliance skill lines, opening up skills like Rapid Maneuvers which is a big speed boost when running or mounted. If you want your character to have access to skills like Warhorn, Caltrops, or Vigor for end-game content, you'll want to experience PVP. Each rank you gain in the Alliance War also awards a skill point and the early ranks come pretty fast.Important note: please, please, pretty please, train your horse's speed every day if you want to seriously play in PVP. Cyrodiil is not called the "horseback riding simulator" for nothing. Most AP gain comes from taking keeps or defending keeps and speed is essential to get you to where the fight is.

Daily Quests: Vvardenfell is particularly active right now with World Boss quests for dailies. Whenever I go to Vvardenfell, I see plenty of groups forming up. These dailies often attract a large group of players, so there's no requirement for your level or skill. The Gold Coast usually has 2 dailies running: Folly and Arena. Wrothgar also has world boss dailies, but usually smaller groups.

Daily Random Normal Dungeons: once a day, you can queue in groupfinder for a random normal dungeon. The first time you run it, you get a massive exp reward, with everytime afterward that day being a decent exp reward. Also, the first time you run a new dungeon, you can complete the quest for a skill point and good exp. CAVEAT EMPTOR: base game dungeons are still level locked. DLC dungeons are not. If you start queuing for dungeons at level 10 and you own the dungeon DLC for IC, SotH, and HotR, expect to see those DLC dungeons pop up again and again because they make up a higher percentage of what you can queue for at your level. The more you level, the more dungeons unlock. Furthermore, using groupfinder will introduce you to the people who play this MMO alongside of you. Good people, terrible people, noobs, scrubs, elites, and everyone in between. Like I said, caveat emptor.

There are many ways to level. As long as exp is coming in and you are enjoying yourself and the way the character plays, go for it!

Yeah, grinding to 50 is a mistake because the true grind is for skill points, not levels. If you grind to 50, you'll still need to collect skill points after.

When I level a new character, I stick to skyshards, lore books, dolmens, and public dungeons. The Destinations, Skyshards and LoreBooks addons help a lot. I easily hit 50 before I have enough skill points. Once 50, I add dungeons to the mix.

The Halloween -- "Witchmother" one starts soon.

I wouldn't say that matter of factually... ZOS already skipped anniversary events for some DLC this year :| And having just had the Reaper's Harvest, I lie in worry about the Witch's Festival.

I really, really want it back... but I'm worried :|
