So if you're keeping up with the latest gaming trends outside of ESO and MMO's in general you will see that the battle royale game PLAYERUNKNOWN'S BATTLEGROUNDS (PUBG) is currently one of the most popular games in the world as an early access game on the PC and soon coming to Xbox One. It's currently the #1 streamed game on Twitch (surpassing League of Legends which had the top spot for 3 consecutive years) and has over 1 million concurrent users playing on Steam. It's incredibly impressive.
For those not in the know, a quick synopsis of the game: Up to one hundred players parachute onto an island and scavenge for weapons and equipment to kill others while avoiding getting killed themselves. The available safe area of the game's world decreases in size over a match, directing surviving players into tighter areas and forcing encounters. The last player or team standing wins the round.
Which got me thinking, why not take a mode like this and modify it to be done within an MMO, and more specifically into a game like ESO? Obviously many things would have to be changed or scrapped to work in ESO but with some effort and tinkering I think it would be a really fun new addition to the game.
- For instance, can't skydive from a plane but maybe choose spawns with magical portals somehow?
- Looting: everyone starts with a basic weapon /armor but can loot better weapons / armor in the game world and take from other players you kill?
- Different types of mounts can be found scattered to use for quicker mobility.
- Solo, Duos, 4-person team modes.
Could it be possible? What are some other ideas for it to work?
