What is the point of guild raffle event?

I've seen a lot of guild recruiting in the zone chat and they mention they have raffle event to offer. What I do not get is why a lot of guild pointing out that they have raffle event. Mostly we join guilds for pve, pvp, traders, RP, socializing, pledges, trials, and etc. Raffles? Not so much.

To me, you win nothing big and you win nothing special. I am not into gambling but crown crates seems like a better option if you want to gamble, at least you get something unique. I may be missing something here, but again, what is the point of raffles?

Some of the raffle prizes are pretty damn decent! I won 176,000 gold in a guild raffle.

I'm in a guild that does raffles and other events. Won the raffle one week (over 100k) and won even more doing a trivia event (playing from original launch helped heaps, raked in another ~100k). They're fun and benefit the guild.

So donating to the guild is basically charity but there is a thing about charity it is easy to feel good about it if you also get something back for doing it. for example when those people come shaking cans for charity they will often give you a sticker or flower or other token of your charity. I like to spend money at a charity book sale where I get a pile second hand books for my charity.

When I dump piles of gold into my guilds bank, so we can keep our trader, it feels better when I have a chance of getting some of it back.

The social guild I am in holds a raffle and and does drawings at our guild meetings (held every other week) just to add some fun to the meetings while we go over what events we will be doing. Our biggest prize to date for a drawing was one million gold coins. When decorating our guild hall we had a raffle where people sent in furniture instead of gold for a chance to win assorted items.

The trade guild I am in the raffle is a 50-50 and pays for our trader each week. They also have an auction to help make sure we have the gold to get a good spot.
and then the parrot said, "must be the water mines green too."

As stated above, Trade Guilds take gold. The prime spots can cost up to 7+ million gold a week and the Guild only gets back 3.5% of sales, so raffles are necessary to maintain a gold balance to keep traders.
In my social guild, we try and keep a trader even though it's not our main goal.
I will do a Guild Raffle about every 2 months and run it for 2 weeks.

Well that depends on the Guild and the GM...
Prizes for our current Raffle: 1st Prize is a Gold Ebony Style Motif, 2nd Prize is a 2014 QuakeCon Bristlegut Piglet Pet Code,
and 3rd Prize is "Wench's Surprise" which will be a Psijic Ambrosia Recipe and a few Mythic Aetherial Ambrosia Potions.
Prizes in past have been 60 day ESO+ Membership, Gold Akavari Motifs and Full Sets of Gold 9-Trait Armor custom made for winner! So some guilds have special stuff to win.
Hope this helps explain the reasoning..

Guild traders cost money. Raffles make money. The end.

    15K dues X 500 members = 7.5 million gold, weekly.
    Not including sales cuts.

How do they ever make ends meet? :)

Yeah they get on my nerves, especially in my trading guilds with fees.

But then I groan when we have another damned raffle at my church or lodge or whatever too. Hate selling them, hate buying them, hate being nagged about them.

Just not my cup of tea. Rather just see the dues upped to what they need to be to avoid the motd changing all day long to reflect the number of tickets left, which makes my smile at a new sale mail more often than not an eyeroll over the raffle.

Plus I can't imagine they like administrating those things, seems a serious PITA.

But when we've gotten to almost 10 mil for a prime spot with ZOS not doing anything, I'm thankful someone else has taken on the burden of doing it.

But at what point do they change this system? Its meh. Especially on console.

Where is this "15k dues" coming from? None of my 5 trade guilds have dues. And if you are in one that has something like that, obviously a raffle is not really needed.

Three of my trade guilds are in very pricey areas, and there is no way they could possibly ever pay for traders on the small amount they make from sales. They rely on donations, and the easiest way to get people to donate is by having a raffle. People are much more willing to put money in when they know there is a chance of getting something back.

I have had trade guilds that have died in the past because the leader and a few officers ended up continually paying out of pocket to keep the trader. For social guilds and such, I don't really see the point of a raffle other than for fun, but for trade guilds (that don't have mandatory payments) I think they are pretty much essential to keep going.

Definitely lots of rare and awesome prizes are available in ours. Many prizes are donated and then with the tix it's a win win for all - raise money for a decent trader, and chances to win some great prizes. Plus they're fun!

Unfortunately, on PS4 15K weekly dues are standard for the top tier guilds. They also do raffles on top of that.

Basically, you get extorted for 15K but you easily make it up.

Or take your chances with a free or donation out of the way trader and make about 75% less.

Either result is the same: the system sucks.

Thinking you haven't been in a guild that does raffles correctly ... or have been in guild raffle but not won??

... cause the opening post doesn't have any insightfuls yet.
