Templar

You wouldnt use s+b for pve for dd because it is focused on tanking / 1vs1... in pvp yea i say as the poll shows DK but if you want to go 1h+s in pve then definatly templar because he has a spamable class aoe ability (jabs/sweeps)....sweps heal you at the same time, all the survivability you need...and if you go stamina you can use repentance and the templar heals...won't have issue with survivability...

if you want a build that cond do everything you might want to look at something like that...but you will not be as good as a dedicated build in any of the roles... http://esoacademy.com/builds/the-brownie-eater/

Spell/weapon damage (and heals from sweeps) will be lower with sword and board, and this is a channeled ability, so you cant block while using it... Also you cant restore magicka by heavy attacking with s/b if you would go with magicka build.
Thing is, any s/b skills are useless for a pve dd spec, and the damage stats are lower. It doesnt give you more survivability in pve, because in pve everything is significantly easier for a full dd spec. With low damage its very easy to run out of resources and die (blocking with 0 stamina doesnt help), and longer fights mean more possible mistakes.
S/b is very good in pvp, but pvp is a totally different beast.

Templar

A good Templar can out pressure a DK pretty easy S&B in PVP .

If you can't beat a DK in PvP as templar then you definitely need to learn the class again.

Warden

I would say warden or templar for the damage dealing abilities that scale with max health. Thats only if the max health from a shield would be better than an extra sword or dagger damage wise though.

NB

Clearly stam NB since it can use class skills exclusively with that 1H+S and still get decent DPS: killer blade, surprise attack, power extraction.

Warden

How is warden in last place??

The question is "highest damage with survivability"

What classes can do dmg / burst while still having the sword and board equipped and heal?
1. Stam warden
2. Magplar

But for the magplar to have survivability and sustain, they have to give up damage. With the healing thicket, birds, and shalks Stam warden can have all three.

Anyone who thinks a Stam DK can out damage a Stam warden while wearing the same armor / weapons is insane. I'd take birds and shalks and all the extra dmg buffs over searing strike and FoO any day of the week.

I also like making lots of sub-optimal builds for fun so lets say I want a S&B DPS character like an olden days knight what would be the best possible build?

Templar hands down. either in full medium or Light, depending on stamina or Magika based. Willpower or Agillity S&B infused shield, sharp 1h (doesn't matter which one on S&B)

It's actually the set up my Magplar did flawless on back in the day, made me that little bit more tanky and blocking was a lot lot better with it.

Sorry but DK's and Sorcs are very very bad for S&B, not having a half decent light attack / weave severely gimps them.

Stamnight blade isn't too bad but Templar is far far better.
