I log on to do trials and play with some friends, I hardly play the game alone or else I just log off and find something else to do

This mind that getting into veteran raiding require getting into an raiding group, you can not pug veteran trials effectively.
One guild I'm in is brave cat trade they have an vtrial group, you have to do 35K dps to qualify.
Yes this is higher than required but they increase requirement to keep group size reasonable as in enough online prime time to do an trial.

This might be the largest problem, too many good players creating an ceiling there they can do trials efficient.
Same way you don't want low level players in dlc normal or below cp160 in veteran dungeons.
If one player is good enough he jump up, leaving the scrubs below.

Remember doing AA and HRC back then it was only trials after craglorn was released, yes we wiped multiple times most runs but still. No gold weapons or animation canceling.
