There is no such thing as fishing xp in ESO.

This is not a troll answer.

No and no - fishing is not a skill and there are no mechanics to fishing, you pull the fish in when it takes the bait, no skill needed.

As others have said, while you are fishing you gain no XP towards levels or champion points. And be prepared to sink several hours fishing, if you are aiming to become a Master Angler. You can kill enemies between one fishing spot and another, but that's not very significant as far as XP gains go.

Think OP wondered if it was an skill like ledgerman, who more you steal and raises it who better items will you find.

Grinding just make you go in circles.
Asking ZoS for nerfs is as stupid as asking for close air support from the death star.

I think Master Angler is one of those hidden gems of ESO. You don't get anything real out of it, just a silly title.

And for some who got it, it was a terrible, boring chore.

I'd like to think though that that silly title and the idea to try for it revealed a little slice of peace for some other folks besides me.

I was working really crazy hours in a high stress gig and I fished for a stretch. Some in some very espansive and beautiful areas I'd never have slowed down and chilled in long term.

I turned down the sound effects and music of the game and turned up the environmental sounds.

So many times, after a stressful day at work, I'd have a glass of wine and listen to the sounds of the ocean...and fish. In peace.

Over months I obtained the title.

It might not have got me a BiS piece of gear or something, but it was an enjoyable, and profitable journey.

Plenty of great XP in fishing :)

I agree. Of all the achievements over 3 years, Master Angler is my favorite.
I would fish for 1/2 hour every morning while I drank my coffee before work.

It netted me over 200 roe.
I still have the last three fish I caught too. Preposterous Mackerel was my last one.

I once hooked a fish that gave xp... it got away, though.

In Rift you could catch a random mob. It made fishing a bit more attentive.

I have spent 10+ hours fishing over the last month without ever getting a perfect roe ...which led me to think there might be some background xp happening apparently not

Just to be clear, you know you don't get Perfect Roe from fishing right? You get it as random bonus to filleting raw white fish. BTW: yet another tedious boring task after the first one to catch them!

Well then I guess RNG hates you! and she can be a ***!
Voltans should give you percentage stats when you hover over white fish (or Perfect Roe) in inventory. I went through thousands of fish going for the Master Angler achievement. I also have all the fishing achievements for all the DLC's and Morrowind. My percentage is consistently around 106-108. Which translates into 1.06-1.08 Roe per hundred fish.

Hopefully your return will be massive in the future to swing your percentage back where it should be.

On a side note: I know it makes no sense, but I swear I get a better Roe return when I'm standing up on the counter facing the room in the Orsinium Bank while I filet fish! Crazy superstitions are also a ***! LOL
