Is ESO the biggest memory-size MMO?

What is currently the total GB size of ESO? I think its about 75 GB together with Morrowind, i have it installed but not sure how to check. Is there any other mmo that surpasses that? I know that WoW is around 50GB, FFXIV around 28GB and Guild Wars 2 around 30GB including all their content up to now.

I really don't like this alltogether i thought that the more the technology evolves within the gaming industry the less memory the games will require but it looks like they can't manage to do this and the opposite happens, they become bigger and bigger (mainly mmos) until people stop bothering with them and focus on smaller games.

I thought the game was like over 100GB in total because when I first got the game it was like a 75GB install and then when Morrowind came out, there was an update of like 25GB... but yea for myself ESO is definitely the largest storage MMO I've ever played

They did an update when Thieves Guild came that removed unnessesary files and replaced some stuff which prevented it from going over 100GB but i think they will soon have to do this update again lol

    Well, on my hard drive:

    ESO (Morrowwind) - 56.4GB
    Rift - 20.1GB
    Lineage II - 25.2GB
    SWToR - 31.4GB
    Archeage - 25.3GB
    Defiance - 30.8GB
    WoW - 34.1GB
    Lawbreakers (BETA) - 28.9GB
    Skyrim - 5.61GB

So yes. ESO takes up the most space.

not all of those are true mmo.
most of those are orpg which goes for the hub > instance land approach.

WoW has basic graphics and textures so it doesn't eat up alot pf memory. Same for liniage 2 which is OLD.

ff14 might be bigger. since it had high end graphics, tons of options menues, zones, quests, voice acting, dialog.

Read the first post in this thread and you'll find out that FF is about half the size of ESO. The only MMO that is similar in size is Black Desert Online.

ESO takes up so much space on the PS4 that I have to constantly delete games to get DLC and now I have a vr as well my space is nearly all gone D:

I think you need to rethink your opening title. In your title you ask about memory size, in your thread text you are discussing file size, two entirely unrelated things, so which is it? ;)

Pretty much this. World of Warcraft is a "low resolution" game, it uses 512x512 and 1024x1024 textures, each of these will usually be from a few kilibytes up to around 1.5mb per texture, whereas ESO uses 1024x1024 for small items and 2048x2048 for higher quality items, a 2048x2048 (depending on format and content) can be as high as 8mb in file size.

Not to mention, while most of those have an amount of voice acting, it is short and brief, and to be honest low quality, whereas ESO has high large amounts of long, high quality audio files, which obviously have bigger file sizes.

Not sure where you got that FF14 has high end graphics and tons of of voice acting, my cousin plays it all the time, and i've tried it for a few hours recently, as well as watching him play when quite a lot, and wasn't impressed, the graphics is actually very low quality, and there is almost no voice acting at all, it's all done in a "speech bubble" text box at the bottom of the screen, and the worst thing about it ... Mogs.

I actually havnt had chance to try legends yet. I had a tank that was top level in the original game. Not sure if I care enough to go through all the content again. Especially with ESO being my main MMO.

Yeah i know that feeling, i was a little gutted when they dd this, especially when i realized that Legends wasn't actually a new game, it was just all the TSW stuff converted to a new combat system and marketed as a new game.

Which is funny, because when L2 released (a month or so before WoW), it's graphics and especially character models blew everyone else out of the water at the time.

WoW is only 34gb because I haven't played it since pandas. I'm sure if I patch, it'll change. Having all this installed on a 2TB hard drive is not an issue for me. It doesn't even make a dent. I move what I'm currently playing to my SSD and just use the 2TB drive for storage. If I ever want to go back to playing anything, I can. I just need to patch instead of download/install the game again. (And I get to keep all my settings).

Games engines in general are taking up more space :p Now with PBR using more textures, higher resolution models (as well as LOD meshes), and needing more code & libraries for cross platform games. Off topic... Have you noticed some game franchises are moving away from unreal? Deus Ex went to the Dawn Engine and Dishonored, Void Engine, went to a modified IDTech engine (since Bethesda bought IDTech anyway), and there's probably more. UDK (UE3) had too much middleware I think.

ESO is around 56.4 GB for the live client. So I guess WoW is close if it is at 50 GB, although I have never played it so I can't check. To be fair, I think ESO looks the best of any MMO I have played, so it makes sense that it would look the nicest.

In regards to your second statement about technology evolving so games should take up less physical space, that has never been the case. As technology evolves what has happened is memory itself has become physically smaller on the silicon wafers, allowing us to stuff more of it into our machines, which in turn allows for better graphics and resolutions.

We do have pretty good compression these days, but you can only go so far with compression before you start noticing loss, or before the cpu overhead of the compression itself starts to become a factor.

Back when I first started "gaming" computers only had 16k of ram and there was no such thing as a hard drive.

Now we have virtually infinite storage space, and I think memory maxes out at 192GB

There are more then enough AAA shooters and stuff that are like 50GB, so I think it's reasonable for a MMO to be that size, given how much is in there. But in the end it doesn't matter anyway with harddrives being multiple terabyte these days.

That... is possible. I can't see the PTS as a separate installation, it must be counting them as one.

In that case WoW is bigger than ESO as I removed the PTR for that game, unless my add ons are somehow bloating it.

You should have a "live" and "pts" folder inside your ESO installation folder. You need to go into the ESO folder and only look at the size of the "live" folder.
