Meta or not that is the question?

Bugged me for a while, 1) why is BIS gear called Meta, Meta is data about data or so I thought. So unless someone has access of setups in raw data terms isn't it an odd term?

2) what qualifies as meta. I mean I fully trust the works of Asayre et al, they analyze and create data about data. However most of the stuff banded about as 'Meta' is because some streamer YouTubes a setup and everyone flocks to it rather than actually do stuff themself, so That's not data right, it's hearsay and becomes popular so people assume its Meta.

On the same vein it bugs me Trials keep getting called Raids but that's a thread for another day as I know raids as a term goes way back.

Meta is a prefix that means 'bigger' 'wider', 'higher level' or 'self referencing'. For example biologists talk about meta-populations, which are groups of interconnected populations. Meta-data is slightly different, as you said it's data about data, so it's a higher level of data.

Meta-builds doesn't actually make sense as a term in it's own right. It's derived from 'Meta-gaming' which is playing outside of/around the game.

Simply playing the game would be picking skills, equipment etc. you think sounds good or you want to use and then figuring out how to defeat enemies using it whilst in the game - you start the fight, see what happens, react to it and so on.

Meta-gaming is 'playing' in advance, outside of the game - finding out what you're liking to be facing and then picking skills or equipment to counter it before the fight has even started. Those builds are meta-game builds. But people tend to cut out the game part because for people who know what it is it's somewhat redundant and people like to abrev everything online.

Meta is the modern version of the old mmo term "fotm." Apparently the people who went fotm got tired of the derogatory connotation and rebranded themselves.

BTW I say biss and fahtum, but also use e.s.o.
Edit: I never actually say bis or fotm outloud though, only in my head. I would use real words instead.

What is this Meta you speak of?

I just have some gear, a rotation, and a plan. It works for me. I don't need this meta thing.

This bugs me too.

Meta is to take something a level above.. data based on data...

An example of correct usage is that if the best gear in the game procced lots of disease damage and a lot of people used it.. that's the first level. The meta build would be stacking disease resist. It's a build based on defeating the "best in slot"

Over time though it has just come to mean "best in slot" since people don't really know what the word actually means. When they lose to a meta build, and they hear that phrase, they just assume it means "best"

Exactly.

Someone thinks outside the box. Figures out a new way of doing things. The sheeple flock to it and demand everyone else follow along. Not once do they themselves try and think outside the box and discover their own way.

Either way I swear a streamer could lie and 1000's would swear it's meta!

Dude that annoys me the MOST. There is a streamer i just discovered not gonna say his name but wow was he annoying in the way he talked.

He called best in slot "biss"
Also called eso "eehso"
Which was the deal breaker for me.

Dude is pretty popular too i guess its because hes not american so i cant relate too much to him.

Lol @Kanar sounds about right!! FOTM makes sense as a term for most of what I see called Meta and it's more correct I think Meta sounds like a degree of technical analysis has gone on so you could be right haha

Also worth mentioning that sometimes meta is used as an acronym for "Most Effective Tactic Available". I would assume that wasn't the original meaning but I know quite a bit of people who use it.

Flavor of the Month is what results when every patch damages the viability of a character you conceived, lovingly trained and practiced on since the last patch. I'm not so sure the negative connotations here should be ascribed to players when they are simply responding to unwanted changes thrust into the game by the developers.
