New Player Question About Motifs / Armor Appearances

Hey, like the title says I'm totally new to ESO and I haven't been able to figure out armor appearances. I'm currently using the Sanctuary set for healing and I update it as I get higher level pieces, but how do I give it a motif? I would like to turn my gear into Dwemer-looking, I got all the motif books from the Guild Trader.

My current understanding is that I cannot do this. if I want Dwemer-style armor I have to craft it myself. I am rank 50 at Clothing, but I don't think I can craft gear with set bonuses or anything that's better than the dungeon set. I'm really baffled when it comes to cosmetic looks in ESO. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    First off: WELCOME TO ESO!

You are correct you cannot transform it you can craft sets however in any style you want just not dungeon/overland sets these are diffrent sets.

If you have any other questions feel free to let me or others on the forum know!

The only way to control the look of your armor is to craft it. Crafted sets are frequently used by players as they are leveling or as a supplement to a "dropped set". For example, on my healer I use the 3 jewelry and 2 armor pieces from the Worm Cultist set and the rest of my armor is crafted in the style I prefer from the Kagrenac Hope set crafting stations.

There is also a population of people who use 2 drop sets, sometimes the styles they come in are rather ugly/plain so those people use costumes, polymorphs or disguises one gets from quests. People who use two weapon pieces (dual wield or 1hand+shield) can use 2 drop sets and a monster shoulder/helm pair. My tank uses 1 drop set (3 jewelry and 2 armor) , 1 monster set (head and shoulder) and 1 crafted set. He *could* use another drop set but I don't feel like grinding the dungeons for the weapons and shields (some of the rarest drops) so it's not only easier this way but also I can control some of his style.

If you have the Imperial edition or the Morrowind edition (I think collectors or preorder?) you can right click on armor and convert it to either Imperial style or Morag Tong style. This only works for a) crafted armor; b) non set armor aka trash drops you might use while leveling c) armor sets that come in a variety of racial styles by default like "Armor of the Trainee" set and I think the pvp armor sets that come in the alliance styles but don't hold me to that I haven't tried.

For this part you'll want to get cracking on your trait research, since that's what will allow you to craft gear pieces in specific sets. If you get junk drop gear with traits, use it for research rather than deconning or selling it. The sooner you start (and the more points you put into the research passives), the sooner you'll be able to craft your nice set pieces.

Yeah start researching right away, start with useful traits like divines first and try to get at least 6 traits researched on each piece. First research is fast but the time keeps getting doubled.

Thank you, guys. I decided that my healer will have to go for Sanctuary + Physician sets so it seems I will have no control over her appearance. I started using a skeletal polymorph that's fun for now, but who knows if I'll like it in the long run. My alts will do what some of you sugggested, that is, using mostly jewellery and belts from dungeons and crafted sets for appearance. I started on researching early so I have a bunch of stuff done but it's totally random, like whatever drops I get that are researchable. Though, I'm totally unimpressed by the crafted sets' bonuses.

Here's what you need to know.

As others have said, there's no way (presently) to change the style of a set item.

But you do have some control over your appearance. Consider the following.

Set bonuses come in two types - 5 piece or 3 piece.

You have 11-12 equipment slots (7 for clothing, 3 for jewellery and 1 or 2 for weapons).

If you're wearing light armour, a robe chest piece will cover the leg armour and much of the foot armour. You can also hide your helmet. So this means you can equip a 5 piece set in jewellery (3 pieces), legs and helmet. Then you can craft (or have crafted for you) in any style all visible pieces of armour and weapons to complete another 5 piece bonus.

It's different for medium and heavy armour because their legs aren't hidden. They have slightly less control but can achieve a similar outcome if they equip 3 pieces of jewellery and either 2 1H weapons or a 1H weapon and helmet from a set.

    Some useful links.

As has been said, right now, all you can do is craft your own dwemer armor sets. Not that I would until you hit CP160 - before that, you will replace your gear so often, it just isn't worth the effort to gather the style materials. And once you do, you will be town between using your style, or that nifty set (including trinkets which are still not craftable!) that drops in a different style... crafted red weapons, or maybe rather the better looking agility/endurance/willpower sets from IC... etc.

Maybe someday transmogrification will come (we all pray for it) and then you can turn dropped sets into your preferred style as well, but so far... no luck on that front.

There're plenty of costumes(some only sold in Crown Store but many acquired in game) and some disguises that can hide your armor looks of you don't like them ;)

Side note, the set generally considered to be best for healing is Spellpower Cure(which drops in WGT and is Xivkyn style).

Thanks! I don't have that dungeon yet, but soon.

If you just can't wait for a particular look I'd be happy to craft you whatever you'd like.

You can always use an addon to swap to battle outfits when you're not being a fashion pate.

As others have said ... start your trait research right away if you haven't already done so.

A lot of times, wearing one (1) dropped set and one (1) crafted set works ... from both a combat standpoint and aesthetic standpoint.

To illustrate, here is a picture of my lowbie Stamina Nightblade:

Dropped set = Ravager (Ebony Style); Heavy Armor
    - Shoulders, Helm, Jewelry (3).

Crafted set = Night Mother's Gaze; Heavy Armor
    - Chest, Belt (Ra Gada Style)
    - Hands, Feet (Order of the Hour Style)
    - Legs (Skinchanger Style)
