So wait, you don't have to actually follow that guy? You can just go straight to the meetup spot? /flipstables

That quest is super annoying if you don't get it just right the first time. Timed crap is also super annoying. Like stupid races.

Unfortunately, you need to complete it. After you cross the bridge and pick up the first wisp, the runner should be somewhere in front of you. Keep picking up wisps that you come across as you follow him, they will refresh the duration. Try to keep away from monsters and if you're not a Nightblade, some invisibility potions might help?
It's quite possible to complete the quest without a single fight without needing invisibility - just by being careful and staying out of aggro range. Run from wisp to wisp, keeping the runner -just in sight- until you get past this admittedly annoying stage...

It's the timed aspect of it that makes it so very bad.

That -- and that cow of an elf says at the start "if the spell runs out just grab another wisp" --making it sound as if you can just pick up where you left off. Nah-ahhhh! NO CAN DO!

The only thing worse than timed quests, imho, are Jumping Puzzles. God I hate those $#@&! things! There's a reason why I don't play platforms -- I'm simply not coordinated enough.

But everyone here has made helpful suggestions and while I won't say that I look forward to trying it again... at least I have a few Plans Of Action to try! Thanks, everyone!

This had me nearly throwing my controller through the TV when I first tried it.

Once I figured out you can and stop to grab a second wisp half way through,, it was a piece of cake. If you don't grab a second wisp, the first one usually dies out before you finish it. You can also have a friend fight the monsters while you keep going.

I've done the quest so many times I know where I need to go without finding the damn runner, which I always seem to end up losing because of the damn mobs. If you know where you need to go without the runner you can go on without it. Quest updates once you find what you're looking for.

I've done that quest 3 times now, and it sucked just as much the second and third time.

I usually save it till last because even though this part isn't too annoying now, the over all quest is kind of annoying. Not to mention saving the king. Getting those damn crystals and then rotating the stupid crystals to free him... ugh. Tedious.

The first time a ran it was as you described. Once I learned, it became a piece of cake.

If you path carefully, you often don't have to fight. If you do, scan around during the fight for another wisp. Grab it after the fight and keep following. On very rare occasions, you might have to do it twice. I pretty much get it first time every time, now though.

    Good hunting.

I can see why it is frustrating to some but honestly i loved that quest. The closest thing to a stealth quest pre thieves guild and dark brotherhood dlcs. It angered me the first few times too but i came to enjoy it during my second character through coldharbour

The fact that I laughed a dozen times reading this shows how horrible humans are. Finding joy and comedy out of someone else's frustration is ruthless yet insanely common.

While chasing the runner, he stops so you can fight the mobs. And be sure to pick up other wisps along the way. Once you get the hang of it you will complete it every single time.

Many thanks to everyone for all the helpful suggestions posted here. I deliberately kept away from that quest for a while, to let it "cool down" somewhat... and then yesterday went back and was able to complete it thanks to all the help posted here!

What they said. The runner appears after you pick up the wisp just as you cross the bridge near quest start. Pick up other wisps as you go. You don't need all of them just enough to refresh the timer. Give enemies alot of room unless you can kill them super fast. NB's breeze through this quest but can be a pain with other classes. Could be helpful If you can manage a couple invisibility pots for those areas with alot of enemies, such as the camp he passes through. (never needed them but sure wished I had a couple for that quest at times.) GLHF

I use Rapid Maneuver with this quest... helps to keep up and gives you time to run out and around enemies.

Actually that quest gave me very little trouble, but then I grabbed wisps each time and was able to build myself a timer buffer. I won't claim any premeditated brilliance on my part, I just got lucky that way as I followed the suggestion the npc gave me to do so.

It was later on in Coldharbor that I got annoying with the blacked out rooms, I understood what they were shooting for (a feeling of dread/horror) but it missed its mark. The good thing was it was brief.

But where I got truly aggravated was the chamber where you were supposed to grab energy and hurl it at wall mounts to open up the next section. In and of itself the design is fine...until you got multiple other players all in there with you, but because you're not grouped the opening of a key by someone else doesn't count for you. But the visuals say it is open and all the wall mounted things you were supposed to light up are already lit up. It was very disorienting and frustrating to know which ones I had turned on, and which ones I had missed. That quest would've been better designed to have the visuals reflect where you personally are in the chain of unlocks, than the way it was set up to be if one random person lights up something, then everyone sees the same thing regardless of where they are in the chain.

All--thanks for the suggestion; I kept timing out and getting killed or delayed by trash, even with good sneak and lots of wisps. What helped me in the end: Go directly to where this area is marked on the map and you'll catch up with the shadow runner.

Normally I am one of those folks who is really positive of the game.

Today I am venting, because today after nearly three years of playing, I ran into the very first quest that Truly Madly Deeply pissed me off.

    "Into the Woods" -- Coldharbour:

    1) Touch the stupid wisp so you can see the runner.
    2) No GD runners in sight.
    3) Run around like an idiot trying to find runners. No dice.
    4) "Mission Failed!"

#@%$*&! -- Okay, I'mm already angry. But it gets worse.

    5) Repeat steps 1-4 three times.
    6) Finally find a runner; dutifully take off after the son of a #@$%!.
    7) Chase that @#$&*%!er around all over Kingdom Come. Sense that you MUST be getting close to finishing this stupid quest.
    8) Runner invariably passes too close to some monster or group of monsters, who then attack you. You would be perfectly content to ignore the attack and keep on following the damn runner -- but NOOOOOO -- runner stops in his &*$# tracks and goes "DUHHHHHHH -- what's that sound?"
    9) Fight the *&# @%&! monsters.
    10) Wait for the runner to start running again.
    11) Runner takes two steps, then goes "POOF!"
    12) "Mission Failed!"
    13) Repeat steps 1-12 FIVE MORE GD TIMES.
    14) Abandon Quest.
    15) Oh, wait -- the stupid, swirly, glowy effect around your wrist won't bloody well GO AWAY -- NOR will the even more annoying swirly, whiney SOUND EFFECT.
    16) Get a monster to kill you on the theory that maybe that will put an end to the GD sound effect.
    17) No dice: the annoying sound effect follows you even in death, you're stuck with the GD thing.
    18) Rage quit game.

Is this dumb-ass quest something that I can safely bypass? Or is it some torture that I have to complete in order to finish the main quest?

Keep grabbing whisps to extend cloak too. I hate that quest as well

True, however I redid this quest again today ( a couple of times,) and the bug still exists, the runner still disappears when he shouldn't.

Like most of the bugs in the game, ZOS will never fix it.

Just ignore the runners and go to where the people are being attacked, the whole runner bit is not required. Simples.
