I might return to ESO after 2 years

I'm thinking of playing ESO again, a game I used to really enjoy. I can't play anymore because my pc is now ***, so I'm thinking of getting the Xbox one version. But first I have some questions regarding the current state of the game to know if it's worth returning;

Are classes now actually balanced? (unlike in 2014 with the dragon knight meta)

Are the DLCs and ESO plus needed to enjoy the game and do PVP without getting destroyed? (Pay to win)

Does levelling still take forever like before?

What new activities and features have been added since 2015?

Is the game dead on Xbox?

Thanks.

    1. Classes are more balanced but they'll never really be truly balanced.
    2. No.
    3. Yes, but with champ points once one character reaches max level all characters you make are essentially max level.
    4. Morrowind, which includes battlegrounds and the new warden class, housing.
    5. No, xbox also probably has the biggest PVP population.

Hi. First of all welcome back (maybe).

As always on eso forums there will be divided opinions, so read other stuff as well. I've been a pc player since beta testing and I really believe that eso has improved immeasurably since 2014, but it hasn't become as amazing as it could have been.

Classes are more balanced than they ever have been because every patch there are balance changes. In the upcoming patch there are no real changes to classes, which suggests zos is happier with class balance. Players may disagree; sorcs are believed to be strongest, and magicka night blades arguably the weakest, but builds and skill are more important than class. Stamina builds are now very viable, and are arguably stronger in pvp but weaker in pve group trials.

The dlc's are better than the Base game, better looking, more interesting etc. But they really aren't necessary unless you want something very specific; e.g. pvp battlegrounds in morrowind, or the solo trial maelstrom arena in Orsinium. Some bits from dlc are hella fun, like the assassination ability from dark brotherhood, but it isn't game changing so you don't need it to play. In fairness to zos they haven't gone P2W yet, but Eso plus does make it easier to play the game because the infinite storage for crafting materials is amazing.

The game is very different since 2015. Veteran ranks are gone, and instead there are champion points (cp) While veteran ranks were just extra levels, Cp is a way of fine tuning your build. Every low level character or enemy is automatically scaled up to level Cp 160, so new players and old players can do the same content and are surprisingly well balanced.

Because of the up-scaling the game doesn't progress zone by zone anymore. All zones are the same level technically, so you can explore the world however you want. It means players don't have to grind to be able to do content, but if they want to grind then it is easier than ever. New players gain levels quicker than before, but slower as they get closer to level 50, but as they have more skill points and experience they have better abilities. After level 50 you earn champion points and the catch up mechanic (called enlightenment) means low Cp characters will earn Cp much, much, much faster than high Cp characters.

These balance changes mean new players can really participate. Endgame players are still better because they tend to have better gear, and eso's big weakness is that you have to grind a lot for the best gear. However, arguably someone in self-made crafted gear will only be 5-10% different from someone with the best gear in the game. This means all players are competitive, but competitive players can get an edge.

In terms of popularity, eso is still getting more popular, and currently the players are fairly evenly split between pc, ps4 and xbox.

So I suggest giving it a try. The Base game is cheap, and even if the game isn't perfect it is pretty good. If you try it then please come back and post about what you think of the changes, it would be interesting to hear from someone who would really notice the changes.
#1 tip (Re)check your graphics settings periodically - especially resolution.

Will never be perfect, but much, much better than 2014. At this point, you can actually make a viable character for PVE or PVP from any of the five classes and your choice of stam or magicka, light, med or heavy armor. Racial passives are a little more balanced as well.

Are the DLCs and ESO plus needed to enjoy the game and do PVP without getting destroyed? (Pay to win)
Definitely not needed to do PVP without getting destroyed, but battlegrounds mode is fun (only available with Morrowind). Main benefit of ESO Plus is crafting bag and extra bank space.

Does levelling still take forever like before?
At launch it took me 6 months to level up through PVP. Now you can do it in about a week just playing the game, doing PVP or quests. If you grind it takes only a few hours. Champion point progress is account-wide, so all your alts only need to level up to 50.

What new activities and features have been added since 2015?
A lot of new stuff, battlegrounds, Imperial City, Justice system, Dark Brotherhood, housing, crafting writ system, and probably biggest change is One Tamriel, so you can group with anyone, do content anywhere in the world at any level, etc

Is the game dead on Xbox?
I play on PC and population is pretty good, but I think Xbox has even more.

    A loooooooooooooooooot has happened.......

    1. Classes have undergone enormous changes since you last played. Although people will complain about whatever kills them in PvP, here is the rundown:
    - Dragonknights, Sorcerers, Nightblades, and Templars are all balanced as whole classes. Warden is underperforming as a whole (never desired over another class for any content) but will be buffed/changed in the next 1-2 patches a good amount.
    - For PvE:
    • The ideal tank is a DK, with Warden being a strong alternative
    • The ideal healer is a Templar, with a Warden being a strong alternative
    • For DPS, you can pretty much pick anything you want but do not pick a Warden (very low DPS). With the exception of Vet trials, it is still okay to choose a Warden DPS.

    2. Nothing is P2W in ESO. ESO+ gets you double bank space, double space for placing stuff in your player house, extra XP/Inspiration/Gold Gain, and more.
    • Most notably is access to all DLCs while you're subbed, which currently includes Imperial City, Orsinium, Thieves Guild, Dark Brotherhood, Shadows of the Hist, and soon Horns of the Reach.
    • You do not gain access to Morrowind, which means no Battlegrounds or Warden class either

    3. There is a "Champion System" in place now. Veteran Ranks are gone. You reach level 50 and you're done grinding, so as a whole it is much easier, even moreso due to XP boosters you can craft or buy. This Champion system works as a way to never stop leveling - you gain Champion ranks as much as you want.
    • Each level grants you a point to spend in the Champion system to make your character more powerful. You gain points significantly faster at lower Champion levels, but slower as you reach greater amounts. In order to maintain balance, there is a cap in-place on how many Champion Points (CPs) you can spend, which is currently CP630 but will raise to CP660 next patch. The first 300 CPs provide base increases to your stats as well, increasing Max Health, Max Magicka, and Max Stamina by 20% each. Those first 300 points are pretty important to complete the most diffficult content in the game.

    4. Off the top of my head we have gotten Player Housing, the ability to change Player Race/Appearance/Name, Weapon-based Ultimate skills, many new dailies to complete (lots are DLC-based), Battlegrounds, and the Warden class. My knowledge is mainly based on console launch forward.

    5. Xbox is fortunately doing well :)

It is worth noting, that although ZOS has fixed tons of bugs since 2014, there are new issues.

If on console, your game performance (mostly in largescale PvP and trials) will be very bad. Crashing is highly common as well as very low FPS. In PvP in particular, long delays on skill casts can ruin gameplay. You won't find any other game like ESO on console, I assure you lol.

Not sure if you played when the Crown Store was implemented, but it is ESO's cash shop. Crowns are the currency.

ESO has taken a much stronger focus on separating you from your cash than ever before. Player Housing is very expensive in Gold, but purchaseable with Crowns too. There is no player storage in your home - it is strictly cosmetic. The Subscriber "perks" include double bank and housing item placement space though, as well as a bag with infinite space to store your crafting materials (the amount of which has grown enormously in quantity over time).......

Mounts and costumes are significantly more pricey than they were when the Crown Store was introduced too.

Crown Crates have been introduced, mainly as a way to gamble real life money for flashy mounts. People have spent hundreds of dollars for no good reward.

    Worth noting this stuff.

Overall, I would say you should definitely consider trying out ESO again!

If playing for the PvE aspect like questing casually it'll be great. If looking for enjoyable and polished endgame PvE you'll be very much disappointed.

If looking for PvP, it will depend on your tolerance. Looking past the serious game performance issues will be necessary to enjoy yourself.

PvP no longer fosters 200+ player battle btw lol. 100-200 player battles is enough to tear performance to shreads now. Campaigns have been reduced in population size by a lot and you'll only have 1-2 fights going on to join in a campaign at any one time, which undoubtedly leads to PvP in laggy situations.

Just putting everything out there for you. Telling it how it is so you can make your own decisions! There is a good chance you'll pick up the game and immediately return it if you're in it for PvP.

Truthfully based on the OP list of reasons he was looking for answers to I would tell you not to return to the game. Simple reason is you seem to have a very negative bias towards the game and nothing has changed that would make you satisfied with the game.

Phrases like "class balance" and "pay to win" are going to be argued to death and are really no win discussions. I would suggest you stick with what you are happy with now game wise

I just came back after 6 or 7 month but haven't played a lot since launch. The game is a lot more fun now, and it's easier to explore and play with friends, 3 of my friends who didn't play before are playing now. There is no pay to win and leveling is pretty fast, my son leveled 10 - 22 in an hour or two in pvp. We play on Xbox and there is a ton of people, and the only lag or crashing I've had is during the pvp event and sometimes in the morrowind dlc.
