I believe it is got to do with weather people feel like they are controlling verses being thier character. That thier character is an avatar.

I always consider myself controlling a character not that in controlling all my characters actions I become that character.
As such I have no trouble just switching character sex, my characters always alternate male and female, the character isn't me.

I don't actually RP but they way I play my characters I have in mind that they all have thier own personalities that when making game choices I try to follow... if that makes sense. I know what this character would do in this situation.

I really don't see why people can't dress their guys how they see fit. As a society, we're a bit sexist on this stuff. Women have been able to dress in trousered suits for decades, why is there still such a stigma attached to a man in a dress or skirt?

I sometimes dress my girls in the suits and I think they look very handsome. Likewise, keep rocking those gowns, guys. You look pretty pretty to me!

    Never really bought that excuse.

Why? How can you not when that is probably the reasoning for most the guys that do it. Yes some RPers do it for obvious reasons. The remaining people all pretty much answer the same. The female characters normally look better than the male ones.

I don't really buy it because as Krayzie said, who stares at their character's butt all day? I'm rarely ever looking at my character when I'm playing

Out of curiosity, do you spend any time at all making your character look 'good'? Pick specific motifs? Use the dye station? Cover it with a disguise, costume or polymorph?

Yes, I am guilty of this.

It's not really any different, playing a female character.

Since the beginning of my MMO playing, 20 whatever years ago, I've always had to play male characters that in some way I could relate to. Some sort of effigy of myself. I'd try female characters but they'd never stick. It wasn't until this past October when I made a new mDK that it changed. My vision for the character was a crazy dark elf woman* who loved setting folks on fire. The aesthetic did not fit any male character I could come up with. It stuck. It has become my favorite character of any that I've played across many MMOs.

The point is, it's the aesthetic. We all see things in our characters. Granted, some more than others, but we all do it. Even the folks that are here for that leet minmaxing meta kill everyone thing. Some of them make good looking characters that appeal to their eye. Some of them make a character that might resemble themselves, and even some of them make ugly/funny/strange characters because they think its amusing. None of it is wrong.

I don't RP, but I still have this idea, this 'story' if you will, of where each of my characters has come from. The aesthetic helps build that foundation, make the character interesting and fun or appealing to look at, even while 'looking past' your character at the target(s) in front of you.

*It reminded me how much I like Dunmer lore from previous TES, and I've created several others to this point in time.

Always been that way for me, which is why i find it weird when dudes play female characters. I actually tried one in BDO because the only paladin class was gender locked to female, and I just couldn't get into it. My characters are an extension of myself, so I can't play female characters. I'm not even remotely into RP either.

To me, what you describe as "being the same", simply isn't.

@Krayzie -- My characters in ESO are just that: fully developed CHARACTERS each with their own backstory, and as such some of them are male (like me) and some female. Two of them are even a couple! Playing a female character is not at all strange, because they're not intended to represent ME. They are CHARACTERS in an ongoing Fantasy-Themed Soap Opera. (One of my characters is Totally Evil and does things none of the others -- or myself -- would ever do! That's his purpose. I hate to think anyone would confuse me for the kind of person HE is!)

... and no, the males are not cross-dressers... but the females dress in male clothing all the time. This is exactly why I wish ESO would put more and better MALE outfits in the Crown Store: women look GREAT in men's clothing, while men just look stupid in women's gear (which maybe says something about how chauvinistic stereotyping dominates women's fashion) and I like a costume to be wearable across multiple characters.

while men just look stupid in women's gear (which maybe says something about how chauvinistic stereotyping dominates women's fashion)

    Actually, not really.

The issue is that woman's clothing in-game is mostly designed to partially emphasis a particular feature that is fairly exclusive to females (Boobs), while mens clothing doesn't really emphasize the features that are more male-exclusive (Very broad shoulders and more freedom to have chest skin showing without changing the game's ESRB.)

This causes female clothing to really not look like it fits very well on male toons, while male clothing works fine on female toons.

A slight alteration on most female costumes for males would fix the issue. (example: Removing the "cloth bra" on the bosmer-styled costume, tightening the chest on the white dress, and adjusting the size of the boob window on the new costume)

I've been wondering this myself. Who plays the game staring at their character's arse? I hope I don't end up in a dungeon with someone like that. "I didn't realize I was standing in a red circle, because I was mesmerized by my magnificent posterior region!" No thanks.

Hi there, I am forever looking at my new characters arse because of the tail!

Wish I could cut that thing off, maybe an option to hide it I dunno but that tail is so annoying on Khajit whilst at the same time the Passives for doing the thiefs DLC makes me try to ignore it, very difficult.

I run both genders in the game. The females are fantastic recruiting tools for my guild. Who can resist a hot wood elf dancing as they ask if you want to join their guild?

I think it's pretty easy to identify the gender of the real person behind the character simply by speech patterns in chat and play style. For my part I always identify myself as male before they join. I don't want them getting all weird on me just because I have a hot toon.

Edit: I should clarify for the 1st paragraph. If my "hot female wood elf" is dancing for you trying to recruit you, I've already guessed (perhaps incorrectly) that you are most likely male based on the things I mentioned in paragraph 2.

First off I am a male. I have 7 Characters in game. 4 male and 3 Female. My main is a Female Breton Sorc.

I don't look at this game as being any different than watching a movie or TV show or reading a book. I watch movies and TV shows with Female lead characters. Why should this game be any different? To me my character is the "lead" in the story of the game.

I don't think many actually do that, it's just that it's a quick & easy way of saying "I like the aesthetics of females, so when given a choice, I'll pick a character that I find visually pleasing. Etc, etc, etc"

Personally, I've always been amused by the whole "ick! guys playing female characters! they must be trans/freaks/wierdos!" thing on MMO forums. It's odd to me that people would think that way. /shrug

That said, I think it mostly comes down to one thing - does the player see the character as an avatar of themselves, or do they view the character as something outside of themselves? For me, it's just an action figure I'm pushing around on a really fancy game board. It's not me. So no, the fact I play pretty female characters in games that allow me to, doesn't mean that I want to be a girl. It means that I like girls. ;)

Similarly, I like movies/TV/books with kick-butt female characters. Xena, Buffy, Sydney Bristow, whatever. Again, doesn't mean I want to be them. (Actually, thinking about it, I don't recall ever trying to imagine myself into the role of a particular character. I never imagined myself as Indiana Jones, never had a sports hero I idolized/wanted to be, never dreamed myself into a book I was reading. I always observe from outside. Hmm. /ponder)

(And yeah, I don't "stare at my character's butt" while actually fighting. But I do play with the camera to look at my characters' costumes, pose them, take screenshots, etc. So it does matter to me what they look like, and I do try to make them look cool/pretty/tough/whatever. Male or female characters.)

I can't and won't speak for others or judge their fashion choices, but there are a couple of "dresses" that to me look like robes on a male figure. Not the wedding gown or the noble gown, but the new Morrowind skirted outfit is very gothic looking on guys, and there's another crown store skirted outfit that looks very much like fancy desert robes. I like the look of those on a male toon.

Don't see why anyone needs reasons or excuses for this. I use to play both male and female characters and so did my wife. In fact, her first character was male. She uses Adoette pretty much exclusively now, but I'm the one who created her. People do it on the grounds that they want to for whatever reason. And there's no right or wrong reason, so I fail to understand why there always so many defensive responses giving excuses as to why they play the opposite gender whenever someone implies they think it's bad or stupid. ~Pibb
