People who make character/account names that they know they'll be forced to change, why?

Like, if it's obviously inflammatory, why bother at all? Isn't it easy enough to make names that aren't specifically designed to rustle jimmies? Millions of players across all systems are getting by just fine acting like normal, well-adjusted individuals, I really just don't get the draw.

To rage against ZoS, make a statement that they think the rules are dumb/arbitrary/, think people are too sensitive, think it's funny, to give them something to complain about when ZoS makes them change it again. Did I miss anything?

Sometimes people get names that are borderline offensive just to see if they get through the system or not.

People just like to push the limits.

Nah you got most of it. The arbitrary nature of forced name changes is what really amuses and encourages people to walk the line again and again. I've seen some blatantly offensive names stay but some really innocent ones get changed. The moderation team seem really subjective and knee-jerk reactionary at times. If enough people report a name, it gets banned. Some people have had their names reported because they were good in PvP so their opponents got their name changed as retaliation. And there really is no reasoning with them. This game is 18+ and includes references to sexual themes (lusty argonian maid) and drug use (skooma) but you can't have a name that references those things?

But its all in how you do it. I am not impressed when someone just chooses a name that just has an offensive word in it. That is just a waste of time and doesn't impress anyone. The clever ones though, those make me chuckle.

Here are some of my favorites I've seen over the years. Some of these may have been changed. Some are these still in game. Some are mine. I will not say which is which so I cannot be accused of discussing specific moderation actions. (Discussion of moderation in general is allowed)

    • Prepare your Sejanus
    • Pelvic Sorcery
    • Dremora Churls Gone Wild
    • Massive D-Tick
    • Frodo T Baggins

I'm sure there are a few more that I am forgetting but reading names like these has always put a smile on my face and made the game better for me.

It's just another way of seeking attention.
But all other "reasons" stated in this thread are valid too imho.

It's also true that some (although a minority) of those intentionally borderline names are clever and/or hilarious.

If you get a forced name change, you can do capitalization in the middle of words/all caps names--which isn't possible with the character creator.

Name moderation isn't a new invention. There were restrictions on what kind of names you can have already back into MUD's in the 90's. It isn't a new thing.

You are right about that. As much flak as I give the mods for some of their name change decisions, WOW naming rules were a lot stricter.

Oddly enough I've been forced to change two names, Faggerdoll Ovencant (a Spoonerism of DC, since my toons were all pvp DC toons back then) and Rngesusbeamer (which I guess sort of has the name Jesus in it, but there's others who copied my name still in-game).

Moistest-of-Spines still gets a pass, though. Stay moist, friends.

Because "Women LOL" or "Feminazis SUCK" or "Wants-nudez" are soooooo funny, and why would anyone be offended. /s

All seen in 1st year when reporting an offensive name was a joke. I assume the players quit before they were asked to change names.

I wish that was a joke. There were people running CE blatantly that got observed by dozens of people and reported repeatedly over weeks but they still didn't get permabanned.

I wish ZOS's cheater "catch and release" policy also applied to some of the funny names I have had to change over the years.

Even though I agree that those names are childish, the feminazis do suck. True feminists who fight for equality where it's actually needed don't suck.
