A question about gathering materials

I have one alt that is/will be my crafter.

I will make a second alt that will not be crafting....maybe...depending on the answer to this question.

Can alt 2 gather the appropriate level materials for blacksmithing, clothing and woodworking, without putting any skill points into those crafting skills. At level cp160, will the alt be able to gather rubedite, ruby ash, ancient silk etc? Or do I need to spend points in the skill?

I have had a couple different answers. One answer is that yes I need to spend points in the skill, just the first passive, up to the appropriate level of the material I want to gather. The other response is that no I don't need to put any points into the skill, but I do need to level the crafting skill itself...ie by deconstructing items.

A third response is that I don't need to do either of those but there is a 50/50 chance I will be able to gather the appropriate level materials, 50% I do, 50% I gather something lower level.

Does anyone know exactly how this works?

The third answer is correct. your character that doesn't have anything into crafting will have a 50-50 chance of picking up level 1 items or max level items on any node you find.

The only thing wrong with answer number 3 is that it's not necessarily a lower level mat as you could put all 10 passive material skill points in at level 12 and farm the CP 160 mats.

Each node (including in surveys) are a 50-50 chance, 50% to be based on character level and 50% based on material passive rank.

If I don't have the refine passives on a char I would sell any raw materials on guild store or zone chat (check MM or TTC) and use the ones I get from deconstructing trash items for crafting. People who have the passives would buy the raw ones and refine them mainly for the gold tempers. Dropped gear from mobs and chests will always be at the right level, you will get multiple units from deconstructing it, and at the same time train your skills doing so.

Oh hadn't thought of that....will definitely do that. Deconstruct items but let the crafter refine all the raw materials.

    Great tip, important tip too.
