Hello.

I am just returning from eso after a long break of over a year. I havent played since they removed vet ranks and my mag sorc is out of date. I see that they have added alot of new gear and changed a whole lot so I am kind of overwhelmed and dont know where to start.

My sorc is CP 480ish. I am currently wearing vicious death head/legs, julianos flame desto/resto, chest, gloves, feet, belt, 3x willpower jewelry and molag kena shoulder Using atronach boon.

I have done a little research and noticed that pet build is somewhat popular. I HAVE NO INTEREST IN PLAYING A PET BUILD.

My bars are setup as follows:

bar 1 (flame desto):
crushing shock
mage light
frags
elemental drain
hardened ward
overload

bar 2 (resto):
streak
magelight
power surge
curse
healing ward
meteor

overload bar:
streak
magelight
power surge
mages wrath
hardened ward

My sustain feels horrible and I feel like I should be doing much more damage. anybody that can help would be much appreciated. thanks in advance.

5 Julianos, 3 Willpower is a good start to get back into things. Do you have any 2 piece monster sets like Valkyn Skoria? If not maybe run 3 Magnus's Gift for now to get a little extra magic and recovery. Divines on little armor pieces, Infused on big. Also, go with two destro staves instead of destro/resto. I'd recommend a sharpened trait inferno staff on your back bar with a lightning enchant and a sharpened lightning staff on your front bar with a power enchant for more spell damage. Since you played last there has been a lot of benefits added to both of those. Maybe start with 1 or 2 magic recovery glyphs on your jewelry and then go back to spell damage as you get more comfortable. A good setup for your bars would look something like:

    Bar 1: Lightning
    Inner Light
    Crushing Shock
    Bound Aegis
    Crystal Frags
    Hardened Ward
    Ult: Shooting Star

    Bar 2: Inferno
    Power Surge
    Haunting Curse
    Bound Aegis
    Elemental Blockade (Wall of Elements)
    Liquid Lightning
    Ult: Destro staff Ultimate

    Bar 1 Alternative:
    Inner Light
    Endless Fury
    Bound Aegis
    Boundless Storm
    Hardened Ward
(Put destro ultimate on your front bar here. This will activate one of your destruction staff passives for better damage)

This set up will keep the crushing shock.frags rotation you're used to but also give you more damage output and higher magicka pool. It also will let you use normal dropped magic potions instead of costly crafted ones. The alternative bar 1 would utilize your staffs Heavy Attacks as front bar damage and give you a bit more damage mitigation. It's much easier of a rotation and resource sustain would be no prob. It's up to you. A lot of abilities damage nowdays are based of your max magicka. Having a high spell damage number isn't as mandatory as it used to be.

The lightning staffs AOE is great on trash fights and synergizes really well with Wall of Elements and liquid Lightning. With the Morrowind update, resource sustain is more difficult. You can either use the Witchmother's Brew drink or max magicka/health food. You will also need to weave some heavy attacks in with your fight rotation to keep your magicka up. When you go into a fight try a rotation like this:

(Start on back bar, LA= Light Attack, HA= Heavy Attack)
Power Surge, LA, Liquid Lightning, LA, Wall of Elements, LA, Haunting Curse (bar swap)
weave Crushing Shock with LA x4 (cast frags as it procs) HA (bar swap start over)

    Bar 1 Alternative rotation:
LA, Liquid, LA, WoE, LA, Curse (bar swap)
    Boundless Storm, HA, HA

Someone else might be able to offer a tighter rotation for you since my setup is a little different but basically you want to try to get the rotation down to where your back bar AOE attacks end right around the time you recast them and start over.

That was a lot but hopefully not too much. you'll definitely see a big DPS increase from that though. At some point you might consider farming Darkshade Cavern 1 or 2 for a 5 piece Netch's Touch set. It's currently very good for mag sorcs as it increase the damage of almost all of your abilities. If you get it you'll want to use 2 Lightning destro staves.

The best monster sets for a sorc right now are Illambris (Crypt of Hearts 1) and Grothdar (Vaults of Madness) Try to get one of those at some point for a DPS increase.

ive taken some of your advice and heres my changes. Have a few more questions though.

running julianos + 3x willpower + llambris set (gold fire desto/purple lightning desto)

    bar 1:
    crushing shock
    bound aegis
    frags
    magelight
    hardened ward
    ult - meteor

    bar 2:
    elemental blockade
    liquid lightning
    magelight
    bound aegis
    power surge
    ult - elemental storm

    questions are:

    1) Should i drop magelight on second bar to throw in haunting curse? I kind of like using crushing shock a little more to proc llambris more but haunting curse is good too.
    2) Is llambris better than skoria monster set for this build?

    Any help is appreciated. thanks.

Most people don't double bar mage light anymore. There was a bug with it that's been resolved now and adding a damage skill there ends up being more DPS overall. Curse would be a great addition there. You should still be procing Illambris all the time with wall of elements, liquid lightning, crushing shock and your ultimates so no worries there.

Illambris is currently best in slot for sorcs. Not only can you proc the lightning and flame version of it at the same time but the additional 967 magicka is a damage increase too where Skoria only offers health.

One thing I've tried though is using witchmother's brew drink and skoria on an all lightning sorc build since you can't proc flame Illambris with all lightning. You make up the health lost by using the drink with skoria to get to that 17.2k health mark. I ended up going back to Illambris and max mag/health food but it was pretty good and the magic recovery was awesome. I just got more damage the other way.

If you have Grothdar, that's also really good. I use that for vet Maelstrom and Illambris for dungeons and trials

War Maiden is a pretty good set just not for sorcs since most of their skills use elemental damage. You can put something together using undaunted skills and soul I believe with the loss of a spammable. War Maiden is great for magicka Warden's though. I believe the math works out to Julianos being better still

All you need is Liquid Lightning, Blockade of Storms, Haunting Curse, Thunderous Rage, and Lightning Staff heavy attacks. Run Infallible Aether if you have it. If not, Julianos, Skoria, and Willpower works. You don't need pets, but if you want to be able to reliably solo world bosses, having the Clannfear tank for you is quite helpful as you maintain your dots.

Do not bother using a Fire Staff, Frags, or Force Pulse. Medium weaving is dead. Lightning Staff HA's are your spammable. Don't bother adding regen, either - it will only lower your DPS and you will still run out of resources. Welcome to Morrowind.

^ A bit glass half empty but yeah resource sustain is more difficult these days. In my bar setup recommendations above I had a bar 1 alternative that dropped frags and force pulse for just lightning heavy attacks. It's much easier to maintain resources that way. With that being said, if you pay attention to your resources and make sure you use heavy attacks the force pulse/frags can still be used but it will be more difficult than pre-Morrowind.

When running solo or with a friend I will use 2 lightning staves and make sure I have 75 champion points into Thaumaturge. That works really great. If you are in trials or a 4 man dungeon, often times

    5x Netch's Touch
    5x Spider Cultist
    1x Maelstrom Lightning Staff
    1x Random Lightning staff

Drop any kind of lightning aoe and dots, and just spam heavy attacks with lightning staves.

Shield up when needed, use surge for surviving and don't stand in the stupid ;)

Too tired to write anymore lol.

    double lighting staves
    necropotence, illambris,
vMA/master staves if you have them with willpower or trial jewelry

scamp, lighting heavy attacks, (chuck some dots in there) hardened ward

mind numbingly boring but effective in PvE & PvP

I run this as my non pet build and it's great. The final boss of Fungal Grotto 2 drops a boss specific sharpened lightning staff that's pretty easy to get. You can put that on your front bar which lets you slot 1 kena or Illambris/grothdar for a bit more DPS
