You should never be screwed out of achievements or skill points, you just may end up getting them in an order the storyline didn't intend.

Now, the quest system in game - you will probably notice that there are multiple places where you can find a particular NPC across a zone, where you left them after finishing the quest. It doesn't mean they stay there.

Well, to defeat Molag Bal, you have to do the Harborage Quest line first. The Molag Bal fight is in effect the final quest of the Harborage.

How I would do it now -

Play DC as normal (and make sure to do enough quests in each zone to get the adventurer achieve), until Vanus Galerion appears.

Do just the first quest of that until you step through the portal into coldharbor and talk to Cadwell.

You will be able to "complete quest" there. Back out of the quest dialogue after that leaving Cadwell with the quest marker. The portal thats open behind you will take you back to Wayrest Mages Guild.

Carry on from there and finish the entire DC storyline. Emeric will still mention that Vanus needs to see you, but all you do is go back to the Mages Guild and step through the portal to coldharbor, and pick up the quest from Cadwell.

Personally, what i have actually been doing with new characters now is rather different -

I do the "silver" zone first, then "gold", then my own alliance, THEN coldharbor (doing the initial quest finisher as detiled above). In between doing this, you will still need to port back and forth to do the Harborage, Mages Guild and Fighters Guild quest lines. I would be aiming to open up mages guild and fighters guild, get enough levels in both to then do their entire quest line back to back. Get mages guild completed as early as possible to get Eidetic Memory so you then know when you find a new document or bookshelf book.

My own personal method is a little more complex, but I am an obsessive completionist with every character I use.

I pretty much know the locations of all sidequests in every zone off by heart, and even most skyshards and lorebooks.

Wonder if you could help me with this, I started again do you know if I can skip all the Herborage crap and just do the high kings quest line till it sends me to cold harbour and complete it that way?

On that note, you can also do most of it that way if you want. Play through the Covenant quest line, get the message to talk to Vanus, and then invade Coldharbour. If you do decide to do it the way you suggested, when you complete Coldharbour (destroy the Planar Vortex), you won't yet be able to fight Molag Bal and get your soul back, as that specific quest requires completing both Coldharbour and the Harborage.

I do have the achievements the guy mentioned so it should be ok, only thing that annoys me now is the king and queen will stay in that cave forever which I'm not sure is intended.

If you haven't already, visit Wayrest and see if the King and Queen are in the castle. You should be able to overhear their small talk. I'm not sure if Emeric sticks around in Bangkorai after all of the quests are done (since as someone mentioned, you often find NPCs just hanging out in random spots - like how Darien is still chilling in both Shinji's Scarp and the Evermore castle), but if it eases your mind to find Emeric and Maraya in Wayrest, they should be there.

While you are correct that it isn't a cadwell issue, his advice about getting destinations is a good suggestion (not the cadwell part but just getting destinations), it seems that one of his issues is he hasn't got the hero title, which means he hasn't done all the quests needed for the title, if he gets destinations he can see easily where any quests he's missed are. So technically his advice is right, but for the wrong reasons lol

The hero of Daggerfall achievement I hadn't read correctly, thought it was for completing main story not doing everything.

Yup, that's why I said he was partly right for suggesting destinations, if you have destinations it will be easier to find the quest you missed for hero
