There is a big difference in writing in a second language and expressing a coherent thought.

Lack (or misuse)of punctuation, spacing and combining multiple thoughts in one sentence, are much bigger crimes.

A person with a basic grasp of the language can do fine expressing a thought.

It's the illiterates that are the frustration.

What matters to me is whether they have a train of thought that is able to be followed. I can deal with missing words, spelling errors, and grammatical errors, as long as there is a cogent thought buried in there somewhere. If the message is rambling, jumping from thought to thought, some of them incomplete, or some disorganized wall of text, then I tune it out.

Now I know why you never post in my threads.

I have to agree with you on this though, I normally like to read a long well written post even with some language issues.
Ones where half the sentences are broken up with **** and jumping all over the place with rage tend to lost my interest in reading.

Sometimes my grammar/spelling is bad. I often think "oops.. did I really type that." after posting a message.

However, I log into the EU server and think "wow.. their grammar is like mine! I really fit in here." :)

I'm a fiction writer and proper use of language absolutely contributes to clarity. It is lazy or wishful thinking to claim otherwise. Just saying.

Now, that said, I would never criticize those brave souls attempting to communicate in their non-native language.

It is not my place to correct grammar/spelling/typos even for native English speakers. I only do that on my fan fiction forum for other writers who make it clear they want such errors pointed out so they can improve.

As long as I can understand the poster on a forum or game chat, I will not complain. My point simply is that I do see what I consider to be plenty of misunderstanding where the improper use of English contributes.

I'm not criticizing anyone and all can make their own decisions of course. Just sharing my personal observations. :)

I don't have zone chat enabled in the game, only English zone chat and that is rarely used. I don't have the slightest interest in using voice chat.

On the forums I have no problem whatsoever with poor English skills from those for whom English is not their first language (on the contrary, I have enormous respect for those using a second language), but I have no tolerance at all of those for whom it is their first language but who are sloppy in its use or simply using texting abbreviations in a discussion forum. I find giant walls of text and a complete lack of punctuation by people supposedly educated to be completely unreadable and best ignored.

I'm fine with people making mistakes, especially in-game where they may well be in a hurry and especially if English (or whatever they're writing in) is their second language.

But it does bother me when it's obvious someone is simply not making any effort whatsoever to be coherent. People using no capitalization or punctuation, just one massive run-on sentence with lots of misspellings and unnecessary abbreviations.

The message it sends is that they don't care - they don't think we're worth the time it would take to think about what they're trying to say and write it out properly, they expect us to do all the hard work of deciphering what they're trying to say from the garbled mess they posted. In those situations I tend to decide if I'm not worth the time it takes to write a proper sentence they're not worth the time it'd take to try and read their post, so I ignore it.

I don't want to read (or try to read) an incomprehensible text in something that resembles English, but I won't make a snarky comment about it either. Having said that, most of the time people can convey their message just fine even if their English is far from perfect. As for me.. Either I can make sense of someone's text and answer the question or help out with whatever problem they're having, or I can't.. in which case I close the tab and go read something else. My English was horrible at one point as well, everyone has to learn. No need to point out to people that their language skills suck, since it probably won't encourage them to keep practicing any way.

I must say that most things I find incomprehensible have nothing to do with particularly 'bad' English, though..
It's mostly punctuation (or lack thereof) that drives me up a wall.

It isn't the poor English that bothers me so much, especially in pvp where the fast pace means that you need to post quick comments, it's the lack of basic manners.

I constantly see players posting 'need this' or 'want that', and I've helped numerous player out by crafting high trait sets - without so much as a tks, thanks, or a thank you, let alone a 'could someone help me out (please)' - it's pretty worrisome to be honest.

Putting yourself out there in a language other than your own, particularly one in which you may not be entirely comfortable with and knowing you will make mistakes, is an act of bravery. I applaud all who put in the effort to communicate and comprehend.

I speak 3 languages, mayyyybe 4 if I can count the one I utterly butcher, so I know the work that goes into it. English is HARD. I'm super glad it's my native language, as I'd not want to have to learn its quirks and irregularities.

To those of you who have taken on this challenge, you are awesome. Keep doing it, keep using chat whether it be good English or not. And absolutely ignore anyone in chat (or anywhere else) who makes fun or who does not appreciate your efforts to communicate. I can guarantee any such person has neither attempted nor achieved the language successes that you have had.

I'm fine with people not typing perfect english. What is extremely annoying, to the point that it makes you look like an idiot, is not using proper interpunction. Use comma's and dots when you type, don't assume everybody reads things in a single line while being able to understand it.

Oh, and about groups. Either speak english or don't use dungeon finder. Don't assume people being able to speak french/german/russian?/etc.

I can overlook almost anything from someone writing in English as their non-native language. As long as I understand the context and intent, I'm good. The far worse butchering of the language is done by native English speakers. The "[snip]" or "dudebro" dialect. I'm not very tolerant of that, and it's only common in one of my 5 guilds.

You're fine. I work as an editor, which means it's my actual JOB to know what good English grammar is, so I wouldn't say it doesn't matter... but I also know that it's not everyone's native language.

As a native English speaker, it's easy to take for granted that your language is one of the most widely used in the world for a lot of business and entertainment, so we never really need to learn a second language when everyone else is learning our first language. I have a lot of respect for anyone who is willing to game and talk to native speakers in a second language, so good job on that! That's more than I could ever do. :)

As for the people here who are talking about native speakers "butchering" the language.... that's what language does. It's always changing, and grammatical rules exist to describe current usage, not to act as fiat. That said, a couple people using the wrong "your/you're" won't change the language as a whole... if you understand what the person is saying, then the language is doing its job. If a professional editor can take off the grammar hat for online socialization, I think most of you guys can too.

Peregrine Huntress, bosmer hunter: "Who is forcing me to stay inside, and where can I find them?"
Lorenyawe, altmer mechanist: "And why would I want to go outside in the first place? Too much to be done in the workshop."
Lorelai Magpie, breton master thief: "I'd go nuts. Lucky for me, I have a little experience sneaking out!"

Hex-Eye Azabi, khajiit daedric priestess: "I suppose it would be lucky, then, that I built a shrine to Mephala in my backyard."
Yngva Stormhammer, nord bandit (reformed...ish): "I hate being inside even when I'm not forced to be. GET. ME. OUT."
Madam Argentia, vampire dunmer aristocrat: "I suppose it would be more of the same. I have a rather... contentious relationship with the sun."
Mazie gra-Bolga, orc scout: "Uh... I'd have to house train my bear..."
Felicia the Wanderer, imperial witch-for-hire: "What Lorelai said."
Calico Jaka-dra, retired khajiit pirate: "This one would like a rest from her grand adventures. Her jewel shop runs out of stock!"
Shimmerbeam, blind altmer psijic: "Provided that I am confined to Artaeum, I do not think I will want for things to occupy my time."
Shauna Blackfire, redguard necromancer: "Sounds like paradise. I hate people."
Kirniel the Undying, cursed bosmer warrior: "I would feel useless, not being able to fight."

I don´t have zonechat enabled so it´s no major bother to me.
What I really, really dislike is the ... questionable way the game is translated. I´m german, playing the game on english ... but when some of my guildies, who are playing the german localized version, start mentioning the horrificly butchered names of places and skills I get a little bit nauseous. :disappointed:
Also - sometimes it is really hard to translate back to know what they are talking about. "Gramfeste" ... are you effin kidding me?

Bad English>>>>>>>no communication at all. It does bug me however when people appear to intentionally misspell stuff, like "r u" still irks me off, also misspelled names and lack of capitalization sometimes. The grammar *** is strong in me I guess :p

I look at it this way.

Your English blows my knowledge of your language out of the water (if above zero).

So who am I to complain?

As long as I correctly understand your meaning then job done, if I don't then I'll ask you to paraphrase.

Once I understand what is being said then I'll react appropriately so providing help no problem, giving freebies to beggers.... fat chance.

I also tend to make the distinction between English and American. I speak English, across the pond they speak American, similar but different.
