Xbox One. How do I add people/friends?

I play solo on PC and when I use to play on Xbox One. I am thinking of going back to Xbox One so I can play with my daughter or at least trade/give her things. Thing is, I don't know how all this social stuff works. So how do I add my daughter so I can trade/give her stuff? Do I go by account name or character name or Xbox account? I just don't know.
