    January 1st, 1970 has a special meaning at a low level. A lot of systems store dates as number of days since 1/1/1970. So if a date field is accidentally not populated and left at 0, it will be calculated on the fly as 1/1/1970 + 0 days = 1/1/1970.

    I have actually worked with a language where dates are stored internally as an integer offset from the birthday of one of the earliest employees!
