Unfortunately that is the way the game has developed - just as well I don't mind dying.
Ward should be up always. recast it often on average every 3-4 seconds. Also learn to break free quickly and always refresh your shield before you get CCd.
Opener
Ward -> curse -> wrath -> proc frag or force pulse -> Ward repeat
If you get low
Ward -> bar swap -> healing ward -> bar swap -> ward -> curse/wrath/frag
Those are the basic rotations practice you will be at least average with good gear
