This is an item with a trait on it......

    The trait is "sharpened"

Go to a blacksmith station with an item like this and as you scroll through the research section, the "axe one handed sharpened" will no longer be greyed out as this item matches that. Click on item to research, doing this destroys the item but starts the research. :)

You need to have weapon/ heavy armor item that have that "greyed" out trait in your inventory. If you have it, then the trait will become white and you can select it to start research ( it will turn blue and will tell you how long does it take to finish research)
To get the weapon or armor with the trait that you need, you can ask guild members to make you a lvl 1 item and use it, or get it in the guild store. Or just keep checking what you loot while you quest in case that you have the trait that you need.
EDIT: if you have any skill points, invest 3 into passive that lets you research 3 items at once and do it faster. it will take you a long time to get all traits researched, so it's better to speed up the process.

You need an item that has the trait you need to research.

Go to the crafting station for that type of item, use the station, and click on the "research" icon.

You should see all the items with that trait that you can research. Click on it and say okay.

You have to use an item with the trait to research. It destroys the item but gets the research on that trait for that item going. (For instance, infused trait on heavy armor cuirass)

If you are looking for an item with a particular trait...go to a guild trader...select item and trait you want and buy the cheapest one for sale(usually just a couple hundred gold), take it and go research it, destroying it and learning the trait.

must have in inventory or bank any level weapon or armor piece with the trait you are looking to research... Some people have their friends craft them a white level 1 sharpened sword and you can research the sharpened sword trait... Works great! until you get to Nirnhorned then its like 5-10K per pop. Oh, and as you get closer to nine traits researched on a particular weapon or armor piece, the research times grow to 30 days... so it does literally take months.

If you belong to a guild, there may be a crafter who will make you research items for free. I'm not the only crafter who does that for the guilds I belong to. Even nirnhoned, but the person I'm making that for needs to give me the nirncrux. Rng gremlins in craglorn don't like me...

Also keep in mind, "Sharpened" CP 160 dropped weapons are usually pretty valuable. Make sure it's a generic white weapon or from a junk set. I wouldn't research the above Axe of Necro lol.
