This is my One and Only Negative Post, The One and Only Thing that I really don't like about ESO: the chat system. It's so useless and annoying. I just can't wrap my head around it at all, and so lately started using a plug-in that allows me to minimize it as much as possible. It was just getting in the way.

The developers obviously want us to be social and play in groups, but that's not possible with the lousy chat system that's in place.

There ought to be some way to improve the system. I understand that the old Palace-style, comic-book style speech balloons would be impractical, especially in the larger towns -- still, at the very least if someone is talking to me, I want some way of knowing they are talking to me, and WHO is talking to me, and some way of replying that doesn't involve having to type in Prefix Codes that I can't remember. And if they're NOT talking to me, I don't want to have Random Textual Inanities popping up in the corner of the screen, distracting me just when some monster is bashing on my head. In Palace, if you wanted t talk to someone you clicked on them. I have no idea how to talk to any one specific person in ESO.

As it is right now, all I could do was ignore it until I got the add-on. I'm much happier now that it's tucked away almost completely out of sight.

So -- if you meet me in Tamriel, you should know that If you're trying to chat with me, I am not being deliberately rude, I am simply NOT receiving you. Can't figure it out, can't be bothered with it. Made it Go Away.

If you hit . [Period/fullstop by default] to free your cursor and click on a person's name, you will send them a private message. All messages directed at you in this fashion are blue, and if you hit the little + at the top of your chat menu you can create a tab that contains only private and group messages to avoid public/zone channels if you wish. :p

    Blue = /t , private direct message
Orange = /group, chat only with people you are currently in a group with
Green(by default) = /g[insert number 1-5], chat with one of your guilds. If you join multiple guilds, be sure to pick a color for each in your settings so as to differentiate betweenst them. :p
If you quote someone, and intend for them to see what you have said, be sure to Mention them with @[insert name].

I have never been distracted by something hitting my chat window while in combat. Chat is often active when I am in combat being a member of a few guilds and never has it interfered with my focus.

It would seem someone focused on chat could be distracted by it, but for someone not interested in it then there should not be any distraction.

Turn off channels. It is in the vanilla settings for chat. You can turn it all off iirc.

I've effectively turned it all off completely with the add-on, and Good Riddance to Bad Rubbish. The point is that it is neither intuitive nor useful.

@Enslaved and @KochDerDamonen -- everything you typed just makes my head explode. Whoever devised this system -- their brain does not work the same way as mine.

@Giles.floydub17_ESO I'm glad you're not distracted by it. I understand that just because it doesn't work for me, doesn't mean that everyone hates it. Obviously this is not the case, judging by the sheer amount of Text Product that flows through it. For me, it's just a big hunk o' noise and I am glad to no longer have it on my screen at all.

That's fine and all, but I cincerely hope you don't play any (vet) dungeons with other players. People who play group content with chat turned off are the biggest kind of asocial.

As mentioned you don't even need addons to disable chats - right click one of the headers to edit (or click + to add) and choose which of the channels you want. Sounds like you want to disable zone, along with a few others. If you just want it out of the way you can minimise it easily as well.

Not sure if it is in vanilla ESO or an addon but I can also click on the word 'zone', 'whisper', etc and choose which level/channel to speak into. For direct PM you can right click on any username/char name and choose to message them.

Each channel has it's own colour as well and you can pretty easily tell if you're whispered/PMd as opposed to zone, as the line is something like ' [Name] whispers: message'

Sorry you don't like it, but it's a fairly standard for chat systems in online games, especially MMOs.

list of chat channel shortcuts in ESO:
    http://en.uesp.net/wiki/Online:Chat#Audience_Scope

/s or /say - say channel is a local channel to talk to people who are in the area around
/e, /emote, or /me - Roleplaying channel that attaches your message to your name. Has a similar radius to say.
/y or /yell - Yell channel has a larger broadcast range than say
/z or zone - Zone channel allows you to talk to everyone in the same zone as you
    /w, /whisper, /t, or /tell - Private message to a person you specify
/r, /reply or /respond - Private message to the last person to send you a private message
/g, /group, /p, or /party - Group channel allows you to talk to the people you are grouped with.
/g# or /guild# - Guild channel with the # being the number that corresponds to the guild(see guild interface)
/o# or /officer# - Officer channel for whatever guild #

For whispers, once you type /w you can start typing a character name or an @ name and it will start to autofill a person's name. You can also unlock your cursor with '.' and click on their name in chat. You can also right click a name on a guild roster, party roster, or friend list and select whisper.

You can set up a custom chat tab and set whichever chat channels you want on. You could have a chat channel that only allows whispers through if you so desire.

Also, if you don't want to see chat, there is an arrow in the bottom left corner of the chat box that minimizes the chat screen to the side so you can't see it at all.

The developers obviously want us to be social and play in groups, but that's not possible with the lousy chat system that's in place.

What you want is already in there, it's just hidden in settings.

You can turn on chat bubbles in Social settings, and by default they're limited to just people on your friend list; I turn them on for everyone because I want to see which person talks.

To talk to a specific person, hold F while they're targeted, and you'll get a menu of chat, trade, duel, etc.

Make some chat tabs, and in each one, right-click and pick just what you want to see in that one: My first tab disables zone and yell, second enables just those noise tubes, third is for just party and tells, rest are for specific guilds.

You are going to have to learn a few chat commands. I dunno why some people aren't willing/able to write a command word followed by a name and their text, but chat's like IRC and meant for the same kind of "power users" in complex social groupings, not Club Penguin or Palace.

Click on a person's name in chat to send a message directly to that person. This is called a tell message and appears as light blue text by default. To manually send a tell message to someone, type /tell Player_Name, replacing Player_Name with the player's name. Tell messages are private and can only be seen by you and the person you're talking to.

To talk to any channel, simply click on the channel's name and that channel becomes active. For example, clicking on Zone makes the Zone channel active and anything you type in chat will go to that channel. To manually switch to Zone, type /Zone. This is how you switch to any channel. Simply type a slash followed by the channel's name. There are shortcuts for your guilds. It's /g1, /g2, /g3, /g4, /g5.

It's all pretty intuitive so you don't have to remember a huge list of chat commands.

As someone said, please don't be that guy in group who never responds to anything being said in group chat. Communication is important in groups. Add a chat tab for groups if you're going to ignore all other chat.

    The chat is horrible.

How do you use the new chat window thing to keep one conversation in one box and the general zone chat in another?

If you can't why does it offer a new chat box?

No doubt I'm missing the obvious. But if /say was the default with a know chat radius it might help. Random shouting across an entire zone does get confusing.
Everything will be alright in the end, if its not alright its not the end.

some way of replying that doesn't involve having to type in Prefix Codes that I can't remember.

I can't believe how many people don't realise you can just click the chat channel and the list of all channels pops up. No need to know prefixes. You just click on the one you want (i.e. zone, guild, group, etc.; group won't show up unless you're in a group), no need to type it in.

    See here:

    B2qrxVK.jpg

Want to whisper someone? Right click their name and click "whisper player".

It's actually a very comprehensive and intuitive chat system. It isn't missing any feature that I can think of.

To make things more organised, create a tab for every guild as well as one for group chat and colour code them (go into "settings > social"). Stay in the group tab when in dungeons/trials to avoid distractions.

Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's rubbish.

The chat system in ESO is fairly standard for MMOs. In fact in some ways it's even better than a lot. You are able to colour coordinate as you like between guilds/whispers/zone/normal/group chats. That's an option I've not had in a while. Now if they would only implement the option for account-bound settings...

I understand that adaptation is not easiest thing on Nirn, but you will manage in time.
I remember when I was first starting with ESO, for 15 days or so I played only from 1st person. When there were more than 2 enemies, it would result in death, lol. Also, was stubborn in using 2h axes only. And look at me now. 3rd person DW and Bow, capable of soloing almost all normal dungeons on any class. You will adapt in time.
