The Dunmer have done a great job ensuring their own extinction with terrible decision making. First they abandoned the true faith to worship daedra (can't possibly see how that could go wrong). Then they decided that wasn't enough apostasy for one day, so they flipped the switch and decided to worship a trio of (false) god kings/queens instead. Of course their former demonic masters didn't like this so they cursed them to look like bipedal rats. Then the false gods they worshipped died/abandoned them and the giant rock they kept suspended over the dunmer homeland as a show of force (talk about vanity) fell, destroying the entire island.
