Is there any point to housing?

I just came back to the game after about a year of not playing (last time I played was Dark Brotherhood release). For this new housing update, does owning a home give any benefit besides a cosmetic thing? Like more bank space?

Nope on space. One of the biggest grips.

Functional terms its a free port, so snapping up a few cheap ones just for that can save a few Gold. You can put crafting stations in so make your own hub, and park a banker or Merchant there too but it's still not as good as a in game crafting hub with bank etc.

Funtional terms, not much. Cosmetic, loads. Bummer really.

Of course there is... (even without storage.. though obviously, I'd prefer with storage)... whoever dies with the best house or the most houses wins!! It's called housing wars... it's a thing with many people.. myself included. ;)

I use mine for easy access crafting tables after dungeons. Free port out of a dungeon, and can manage inventory a lot quicker than any town.

Housing is, basically, the infrastructure to support the furnishing minigame. You'll start finding furnishing plans and house items every once in a while while playing, which are used to decorate the houses. It's entirely cosmetic, but a chunk of the player base (myself included) has a lot of fun with that, and everyone else is making loads of profit selling furnishing materials and plans to that chunk, so everyone wins. :)

If decorating in-game houses doesn't sound fun for you, then don't worry about it. Each alliance has a free apartment, if you have alts in that alliance to run the quest. Get those for the free teleports, then never worry about it again.
    Living vicariously through my characters.

    My Girls:
"If you were trapped in your house for, say, a year, how would you pass the time?"

Nephikah the Houseless, dunmer assassin: "I suppose I could use the break. I have a lot of business holdings now that need management."
Swum-Many-Waters, elderly argonian healer: "I think that I would enjoy writing a memoir."
Silh'ki, khajiit warrior-chef: "Would this one be able to go outside, to the nearby river? It's hard to fish without water!"
Peregrine Huntress, bosmer hunter: "Who is forcing me to stay inside, and where can I find them?"
Lorenyawe, altmer mechanist: "And why would I want to go outside in the first place? Too much to be done in the workshop."
Lorelai Magpie, breton master thief: "I'd go nuts. Lucky for me, I have a little experience sneaking out!"
Rasheda the Burning Heart, redguard knight: "I would continue my training to keep my skills sharp."
Hex-Eye Azabi, khajiit daedric priestess: "I suppose it would be lucky, then, that I built a shrine to Mephala in my backyard."
Yngva Stormhammer, nord bandit (reformed...ish): "I hate being inside even when I'm not forced to be. GET. ME. OUT."
Madam Argentia, vampire dunmer aristocrat: "I suppose it would be more of the same. I have a rather... contentious relationship with the sun."
Mazie gra-Bolga, orc scout: "Uh... I'd have to house train my bear..."
Felicia the Wanderer, imperial witch-for-hire: "What Lorelai said."
Calico Jaka-dra, retired khajiit pirate: "This one would like a rest from her grand adventures. Her jewel shop runs out of stock!"
Shimmerbeam, blind altmer psijic: "Provided that I am confined to Artaeum, I do not think I will want for things to occupy my time."
Shauna Blackfire, redguard necromancer: "Sounds like paradise. I hate people."
Kirniel the Undying, cursed bosmer warrior: "I would feel useless, not being able to fight."
Echoes-from-Dragons, argonian who thinks she's a dragon: "All the better to count my hoard!"

    Usefulness in housing for me:
Free ports to various locations of use
Crafting tables in centralized location free if s'wits dueling and casting needless spells all over being annoying
    Mundus stones in centralized location
A place to go, at will, free of s'wits mentioned above
DPS target dummies I can use with out s'wits running by 'helping'
A place for friends and guildmates to gather, with out interference of... the s'wits mentioned above

Did I mention it's free of s'wits? That's probably the biggest selling point.

One of my Guilds has a guild hall with every craft station in it, including the attunable ones for every crafted set in the game, in Blacksmithing, Clothing and Woodworking variants.
Not having to hike over to Imperial City to finish a Master Writ is quite handy.

    Not really.
You can place a crafting stations there (but every costs something like 50k gold at guild stores), but every town has it anyway.
You can buy (for 5k crowns each) and place there a merchant and banker, but merch doesn't repair your gear and banker doesn't allow you to get to guild store.
You can buy a target dummy (for ~70k g) and place it there and practice your DPS rotation.
You can buy and place there expensive furnishings and or your trophies to show off yourself for visitors, but who the heck really cares? Noone would really visit your home, at least - often

The only reason I can see for owning a big house - making some roleplay event there. Nothing else.
If you are not roleplayer, then a free inn room is absolutely enough for you. Or, some small house for ~70k g.

It's the closest thing you can get to a book staircase and book fort from previous elder scrolls games since you can place the furniture anywhere?

    nope. there isn't.

Heck you can't even randomly visit other players homes unless they are on your friends list. Strangers can't randomly wandering about your home. For shame.
