Yes, it is annoying but it better than flying through the air and possibly having a fall great enough to kill us when we are exploring in high areas.
I was sick of it the day it was added.
I really wish they would find a way to make it not happen, but I guess priorities and all that.

Is the mechanic your are discussing similar to when a horse would get stuck in part of the environment, begin to run super fast, and then become launched across the map?
I would take that over slow fall 1,000,000 times over.
