When talbards were introduced, your body and leg armor didn't have unique meshes. The basic racial styles, the original 4 rare motifs, dwemer, glass, and a few other styles that were in the game back then (even if they weren't craftable), are actually painted onto your character.
With those, the talbards work fine. Any other armor replaces the chest piece when you equip a talbard.
