War Maiden or Julianos on a Magplar, and Why?

I've been hearing a lot of controversy between the both, but the real question is, which is better on a magplar and Why?

(EDIT: MY CURRENT BUILD IS 5 MOONDANCER 3 JEWELRY 2 SHARP SWORDS. 5 JULIANOS. 2 GROTHDAR, BACKBAR MOON LIGHTNING SHARP DESTRO)

I'm not anywhere near end-game (CP220) but dropped some cash on War Maiden Head+Shoudlers+Jewellery last night to try out.

I noticed a distinct increase in damage due to the War Maiden 5pc affecting the majority of the skills I have slotted. Can't backup my perception with tangible parse results but I did feel a difference. Still on the fence.

Well, I think it's depend of how many damage destro weaving, fire wall, fire storm and reflective light does on your rotation. As a dunmer magplar you may prefer julianos, but as an another race I dunno.

If you are on pc and have a julianos set you may test your dps and see with combat metrics how much dps your fire skills does. It'll help you to choose, though I don't know where is the cap.

Yes but as one is overland drop and the other crafted they fit well together.

Such a waste to use together. Use either/or war or juli with Moondancer orMaster architect.

What really matters here is that with any crafted sets you can craft, you can also adjust between weapon and armour for what pieces you need (you can't craft jewels with that bonus) when you can not get your hand on a set bonus from buying it in Guild Store or farm it yourself.

Julianos first pieces will give you more crits, so with only 2 pc which you can combine between one of your weapon to have that bonus active (ex. one pc on leg + weapon). It also depends if you want to be able to use monster sets with take up head and shoulder slots. Then you have also to count into the big picture the effect between 5 pc light armour passive or any other passive that is relevant for your build. It is the same if you are stamina based and might want medium armour passive or even heavy; at 5 pc you get most out of one of these passives - it is a puzzle you have to solve by yourself to see what you need and how it works with your active skills. (Don't forget that CP also play a role in this puzzle as there are 5 pc bonus also in CP constellations).

Crafted sets give you the power to actually control some bits of this when you are using War Maiden or any RNG based sets (you might be lucky enough to find the right weight and with the right traits in Guild Stores, but most likely you have to spend time farming it). Don't forget to look at other crafted sets as you maybe only need 2 pieces set bonus from crafted set to get what you need.

I would start to look at jewels you have in purple or better and make my build from that starting point. Willpower is rather cheap now and give you 1400 Magicka with only 2 pc (which make it possible to combine one amulet + weapon and use 2 rings for other options.)

Well better doesn't matter if both are good and can be used.

Frankly it depends on what else your build is doing.

if you are a staff build using destro and have therefore got a noticable part of your damage from shock or fire or ice, then julianos across the board bonus is likely going to outshine the bigger war maiden bonus that applies only to MAGIC damage attacks.

if you are healing a lot, then again the julianos boost for healing also better than war maiden.

But if you are doing neither of these and just throwing around magic damage, then war maiden may be better.

But... really you should be comparing war maiden to other drop sets because as drop sets they can occupy the jewel slots while julianos cannot.

What is your primary focus in the game? Regular PVE and questing? Dungeons and trials? PVP? War Maiden is better for options 1 and 3. As for option 2, it depends on your role. If you are mostly a DPS magplar, then choose War Maiden. If you are mostly a healer, the choose Julianos.

      war maiden doesn't boost elemental damage - so as a magplar assuming front bar dual wield, back bar destro it doesn't boost;

      vampires bane / reflective
      elem blockade
weapon enchants (1 of which is normally fire)
destro light / heavies on back bar
      ultimates (meteor or destro ult)

In short, IIRC the maths was something like ---

if >27% of your dps is elemental then Julianos is better..

Every parse I run, my elem damage is way above 27% and so war maiden never wins.

Note: it is even worse if you dual bar destro/destro

In most cases Julianos is better since it buffs your spell damage for everything, where war maiden only buffs skills that do magic damage. Especially if you are using a staff.

If you were going to do dual swords on a templar, and don't have many elemental based skills in your rotation then War Maiden could be better.

As others have said, attack a dummy see what your damage skills mostly comprise of, and decide if it would help more to boost all skills by 300 spell damage, or just the magic damage by 400.

Gonna do soul shine and war maiden for pvp when i have a dedicated healer. If I'm going solo, julianos is better as it increases healing and crit. Crit heals are op. You'll notice a massive difference in self healing with julianos being overwhelmingly better if you're filling a duel propose.

Boosts damage/healing of EVERY MAGIC SKILL, it also boosts crit by more and is far easier to get.

War maiden does benefit from Major and minor sorcery, it was tested on PTS and on Live. Same applies to all similar sets; Netch's touch, Silk of the sun, Ysgramor something-something... It has been discussed here on the forums many times before already.
if >27% of your dps is elemental then Julianos is better..

You're right about the difference how it affects if you use dual destruction staves vs. dual wield on the front bar - but I'd like to know where you read about the 27,0% thingy?
For pve Julianos clearly wins. You do too much elemental damage in pve to ignore that

May I ask have you tested (multiple tests ..) or calculated this in any way? Sure it might seem so because of
      • staff attacks
      • ultimates (Shooting star, Elemental rage)
      • Reflective light or Vampire's bane
      • Elemental blockade
      • ...

but if you look at the DPS parses your execute and Puncturing sweeps are really high on your best skills - usually both of them are on top 3. And if you think about how long fights can be and you can get that extra ~285 spell damage (129 spell damage from 2pc bonus and 101 spell damage from the difference between 5pc bonuses, 25,0% added from Major and Minor sorcery) in exchange for ~3,1 crit. chance for most of your skills where at least two of them are basically the most important ones might be enough for War maiden to be more useful.

However, that applies pretty much only on trials. Why? Because when you're soloing you want overall, "pure", spell damage to boost your heals, for example.

But I really wouldn't say it's obvious without mathematical prove or a lot of equal tests.

War Maiden does not boost elemental damage. I think enough DPS comes from elemental blockade and your ultimate to make a flat damage boost better than just a magic damage increase.
