Couple of basic questions...

Been playing for a while, but curious about some things:
1. Does combat scale to your PC level? Or do you just need to level up to win the harder battles?
2. Do you need to buy from the Crown store in order to craft a weapon/armor etc (I am a blacksmith)?
3. Where do you find out about guilds, joining a guild, etc.

Thanks.

    1. Combat scales. Since One Tamriel last year, your characters are actually scaled up, so you'll find yourself getting a little weaker in base states as you go from 1-50. This is balanced out by improvements in skills and gear, though, so it makes it a pretty even experience. By the end of it, you do end up feeling stronger than you were at the beginning, even if the upward climb is subtle. If you find yourself facing something that's too hard, leveling up usually does the trick... you may not be much more powerful, but learning how to play your class helps a lot, too!

    2. Not at all. Just head into a major city and check your map for the crafting stations. If you have the materials (found in the world) and the right level crafting skill, you can craft it! You don't need to worry about this too much when you're starting out, though it's a good idea to start researching gear you've found, since it's a time sink.

    3. There are two things you could mean by "guild." The in-game faction guilds (e.g., Mages and Fighters Guilds) have halls in the major city of each zone. Head there and talk to the Hall Steward, and they'll happily recruit you. It's a good idea to do this early, since finding books and defeating Dark Anchors gives you experience toward those guilds' skill lines.

The other kind of "guild" is player guilds, which work like any MMO in giving you a group of players to talk to and join for content (pvp, dungeons, etc.). Guilds also drive the player-to-player economy, as there is no Auction House, but rather a Guild Trader system. You can see what guilds are recruiting by going to the Forum main page and scrolling aaaaaall the way down to the Guild Recruitment section.

    Living vicariously through my characters.

    My Girls:
"If you were trapped in your house for, say, a year, how would you pass the time?"

Nephikah the Houseless, dunmer assassin: "I suppose I could use the break. I have a lot of business holdings now that need management."
Swum-Many-Waters, elderly argonian healer: "I think that I would enjoy writing a memoir."
Silh'ki, khajiit warrior-chef: "Would this one be able to go outside, to the nearby river? It's hard to fish without water!"
Peregrine Huntress, bosmer hunter: "Who is forcing me to stay inside, and where can I find them?"
Lorenyawe, altmer mechanist: "And why would I want to go outside in the first place? Too much to be done in the workshop."
Lorelai Magpie, breton master thief: "I'd go nuts. Lucky for me, I have a little experience sneaking out!"
Rasheda the Burning Heart, redguard knight: "I would continue my training to keep my skills sharp."
Hex-Eye Azabi, khajiit daedric priestess: "I suppose it would be lucky, then, that I built a shrine to Mephala in my backyard."
Yngva Stormhammer, nord bandit (reformed...ish): "I hate being inside even when I'm not forced to be. GET. ME. OUT."
Madam Argentia, vampire dunmer aristocrat: "I suppose it would be more of the same. I have a rather... contentious relationship with the sun."
Mazie gra-Bolga, orc scout: "Uh... I'd have to house train my bear..."
Felicia the Wanderer, imperial witch-for-hire: "What Lorelai said."
Calico Jaka-dra, retired khajiit pirate: "This one would like a rest from her grand adventures. Her jewel shop runs out of stock!"
Shimmerbeam, blind altmer psijic: "Provided that I am confined to Artaeum, I do not think I will want for things to occupy my time."
Shauna Blackfire, redguard necromancer: "Sounds like paradise. I hate people."
Kirniel the Undying, cursed bosmer warrior: "I would feel useless, not being able to fight."
Echoes-from-Dragons, argonian who thinks she's a dragon: "All the better to count my hoard!"

(Signature idea shamelessly stolen from Abeille.)

You'll be level scaled until you reach level 50, all mobs are in theory balanced around champion 160.
You'll still get stronger from levelling due to gear and skills though.

You don't need anything from the crown store to craft, options are there for short cuts but everything is obtainable* and achievable in game with no real life cash.

*there are two crown store only motifs but these are no longer available.

There is a guild recruitment forums you can look at adverts in or make a request to join one.

Are you by any chance the same Mykul who made the famous cloak mod for Morrowind? I used that wonderful mod in many a game.
