Hi everyone.
Monday will be a public holiday for most of the EU countries. Is it possible to have no maintenance for EU servers during this day please ? It would be a great new for many EU players. Thank you ;)

Unlikely to happen. As ZOS is an American company they only observe American holidays.

They can at least try to do it during our night. Not from 10 am to 2+ pm as usual :/
It would show they care a bit about EU community

Actually, I am kind of astonished. Its a christian celebration, one in the spirit of unity and loving-each-other-spirit and the benefits of communicating with one another. Its the day when the cristian church was born. Why would americans NOT celebrate it?

On the other hand, I never understood relious ppl alltogether...

Unfortunately as is the way of the world, you will always inconvenience somebody.

Pentecost is no longer a holiday in the United Kingdom, they moved it to May in the 1970s.

As ZOS are an American company they observe American holidays, and having the patch delayed for us due to holiday would also delay it for the NA servers and possibly the console servers too, throwing the whole system out of whack.

They will be down for a few hours, head outside and go for a walk..

Kai wrote on the German forums that they cannot move the maintenance, simply because morrowind is released the day after. Otherwise, they might have moved it. But having the servers offline on launch day seemed worse to them than on a public holiday ;)

I think that article is using holiday in the American English sense of a religious or national festival. Whereas I suspect the OP is using it in the British English sense, meaning simply a day when most people don't have to go to work or school.

For example if you look at the page for May 1st it looks like May Day is a relatively obscure pagan holiday in the UK, only celebrated by certain people. It doesn't mention that the first Monday in May is also a bank holiday - what Americans call a public holiday - where the majority of schools and businesses are closed, even if most people don't remember or care why.

It's not the same server but the client is the same so they can't do two separate maintenance times anymore

May Day obscure? Tell that to the people dancing round their poles! ;)

In the UK we mix the old and the new - May Day is old, Whitsun (now Late Spring Bank Holiday) is only two thousand years old, relatively new :)

I'm surprised the ESO marketing team didn't take into consideration national holidays when choosing a release date for a global product.

Not many "religious" holidays get recognition outside people who follow the religion, in the US. Obviously Christmas & Easter, but a big part of that is because they turning into a commercialism/etc juggernaut (candy sales & bunnies for Easter, etc). Lent is obvious by the way everyone starts selling fish sandwiches :D . I notice a couple Jewish holidays due to the grocery store sales of Kosher foods. But beyond that - religious stuff isn't generally nationwide. I imagine the whole "separation of church & state" thing has some bearing - religious holy days don't tend to lead to secular days off.

(You might get school days off for some, but they wouldn't be federal or work holidays)

edit: looking at a Wikipedia page on US Federal holidays, Christmas is the only remotely-religious one listed. The others (besides New Years) are nation-related... Memorial Day, Veterans Day, Columbus Day, Washington's birthday, Independance day, etc...

    They do respect that.

A long while ago, Zenimax did have separate maintenance times for NA and EU servers. This led to issues like Imperial City being released on NA a full day before EU, and that feels bad. Again, you inconvenience somebody no matter what.

During the time the servers are down, it's quiet time for EU anyway, the majority of people are either at school or work and the servers are always up for prime time unless unforeseen problems occur.

It boils down to the fact that ZOS get complaints both ways, the complaints back in the days of separate maintenance times were just as voracious as they are now, and this method is far easier to manage, convenient and means that all releases are dropped worldwide simultaneously.

It is a public holiday in a number of countries in Europe, with a major content release the following day.

Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on your point of view) a major content release trumps a public holiday.
