So, about Necropotence...

Why is Sharpened Lightning Staff of Necropotence so sought after? The price is pretty high, compared to Divines armor pieces.

Wouldn't it be better to just wear 5-piece Necropotence armor? This has always confused me...

Basically any sharpened weapons are going to be expensive for a few reasons:
-crafted sets are only OK compared to dropped sets
-weapons tend to be the hardest to obtain of dropped sets, sharpened being fairly rare among already rare gear
-people hype some sets up beyond their actual effectiveness. e.g. necro is BiS for some builds, but Julianos is comparable. You pay to truely min/max in grinds or gold.

I'm not sure what the best in slot setup is but they usually combine some sort of two sets of dropped gear and a monster set. That in mind, and sharpened being one of, if not the most effective trait for weapons, makes the prices we see what they are.

The usual bis setup for a mag Sorc in a PvE environment, where you are able to use pets, is:

    2 x Ilambris
    5 x Necropotence
3 x Aether/Moondancer for the 5% minor slayer damage Bonus (this bonus is for PvE still stronger as any other 3-set or even 5-set-bonus)

If you have no vMA staves (which are a major pain to get btw) your only chance to still improve your gear is either by a sharpened Aether/Moondancer staff (for the 4 set bonus of Aether/Moondancer -> 129 more spell damage on legendary) or a Necropotence staff and wearing an Aether/Moondancer piece as an armor slot (boots etc.) for the same result.

In short: sharpened vMA staves are a major pain to get, sharpened Aether and Moondancer staves are the same major pain to get (even if you are a raider), so the most efficient method to upgrade is to get a Necropotence staff, which is BoE and can be bought in guild stores. You just need gold, which I would rate as a significant advantage over being a victim of the awful RNG.

    This ^^

Well I use 4 pcs Aether but same thing - don't have to farm trials for sharpened weapons.

If you have a sharpened inferno and lightning you can have 4 peices of trial gear without having to farm for a sharpened moondancer/infallible aether staff for 10 years. This is provided you don't have a sharpened vma inferno staff as you get more damage with that on the back bar than 4 peice trial 5 peice necro. If you do, necro clothes is best witb 3 peice trial and 1 random sharp shock staff. I bought a mils worth of ap boxes for necro stuff and didn't get any staffs, that shows you its reasonably rare.

Got it, thank you. Looks like I should get a Sharpened Necropotence as well.

Found some older post describing similar problems. Did ZOS fix this? If not, then there isn't a point using +max magicka/stamina/health set weapons.

Never had the issue with Necro but Veneer, Ebon and Worm loose the bonus for your group if you use weapons and swap. They might have fixed it but don't think they did.

    Thanks!

And if I don't do trials, would it be best to have Necropotence jewelry + some armor pieces, and a monster set, plus Julianos (4 pieces)?

Not a min-maxer here but would still like to see some good damage. I find raids too stressful in other games and will likely avoid them here.

    so much this

a set that provides 1% more dps will cost MILLIONS of gold more then second place.

I have always preferred buying the almost equally competitive second place and sitting on a nice pile of gold.

Maybe...but Necro is not expensive. The weapon is just ~250k and the rest is nothing. It's not like there's any use for gold. What else to do with it? Buy all houses?

Compared to dungeon/trial sets, Necros are so easy to get. I also hate doing group content I'm not prepared for, so anything I can get from guild stores the moment I reach cp160 is perfect.

(And Necropotence is not there to replace Julianos. Most I believe have Julianos + Necro before finding better pieces to replace Julianos.)

Its true, i drop millions of gold on gear for builds, the way i see it its 10x faster to make the gold and buy it than farm it yourself. If you think, 250k isnt a lot considering it would probably take you weeks to farm when you could just sell a few motifs or farm keyshards and afford one in a few days.

If you aren't a raider and therefore don't have the option to get Aether/Moondancer jewelry, this would be a good option in my eyes. You can make yourself a Julianos staff then and avoid the costs of the Necropotence Staff. Should be absolutely ok for solo and 4-man-vet stuff. You might even go for 5 x Necro + 5 x Julianos and spare the undaunted set. It should still be ok for any solo content and vet pledges.

I agree to the above posts concerning buying gear in shops. What else you wanne do with your gold in this game, after you got your motifs, recipes and enough materials for your upkeep (herbs for potions as an example) and future upgrades (some waxes and alloys as an reserve) together ?

Personally I have several goals in that game. Besides being an achievement junkie, I like it to bring gear to perfection.

When I do play my Sorc with pet I use the above posted build:

    2 x Ilambris
5 x Necropotence (necro lightning and necro flame staff, so one for each bar)
4 x Aether/Moondancer for the 5% minor slayer damage bonus

I don't have a vMA staff and although I run that once a week (and I hate it btw) I just don't count on ever getting a vMA staff and if it would drop I wish it would be a sharpened flame staff for my main raid char (magDK) and afterwards I would never set a foot into that solo instance.

As there are still encounters where you can't use pets or it is very difficult to use pets without occasional pet deaths and recasting (which f... up your dps score btw), my goal is to get a netch set besides Necropotence for pet unfriendly encounters and just for the sake of having the freedom for another playstyle and to test if it might be better as BSW. So my Sorc's new home is currently DC1.

I always wonder how people can be bored in that game. Besides farming Netch I get my slayer achievements done there and have loads of fun with 4-man-sorc-farm-groups accompanied by a zoo of pets :-)

My magsorc runs Necrox5 and Julianosx5 and does as well as I want. We farmed Rivenspire dolmens for 3 purple jewelry bits and then bought divine Necro belt & infused hood. Result is, we have plenty of control over the appearance and basically stay out of the whole gear farming hamster wheel (except for a bit of dolmen work).

Basically, I avoid worrying about any gear beyond crafted or overland dropped sets. Since I also avoid high end content, this works great for me.

Just use charged necro staves and spinner's as the second 5/5 armor set with whatever heavy shoulders you prefer.
If you play a pet sorc, you can solo normal dungeons, all group quests and dungeons in Craglorn. You can also do vMA with ease, once you've learned a bit the fight's mechanics.
Here is the build, with more variations.

You don't have to spend a fortune or farm for eternity to get those staves. It's a waste of time.
